Vancouver Is Going to Get Screened

When I was a kid my mum once told me that her friend's husband would book time off during the Vancouver International Film Festival and catch as many flicks as possible. I didn't know the word cinephile back then and I couldn't fathom why someone wouldn't fly away for their holidays. As an adult it makes more sense. Movies don't just entertain, they send us off the cliff of reality and we dive into emotions and thoughts, images and sounds that are foreign, beautiful, and ultimately, introspective.
This year's VIFF starts on Friday, September 29 and runs 'til October 14. Besides the 329 flicks the VIFF has a cache of treats. The thirty best entries for the Trade Forum One Minute Picture Film Contest will be shown at the Trade Forum September 28 - 30, there will be three gala screenings (Water, U-Carmen In Ekhayelitsha, and L'enfant), special presentations (Manderlay,
Dear Wendy, Cache, North Country, and Fateless), some events at the beautiful and recently-opened Vancouver International Film Centre and a special selection of French and Brazilian movies.
