After I wrote this, an article appeared in the Georgia Straight that explains the project, and the goals of the filmaker, in greater detail.
Marshall McLuhan said "The medium is the message". In dealing with Iraq, this has never been more true. Who owns the medium that is bringing you the message? The pro-Israeli Asper Family who owns Canwest Global? What sort of cultural filters does it go through? What are the interests at stake? Anyone can pick a news bite off of Reuters and file a story on the Iraq war. But with only a select few journalist "embedded" within the US Army, and the rest behind the safe confines of the Green Zone, who really knows what's going on? Even if we do get a glimpse of reality, whose reality is it? These questions are ultimately addressed by Iraqi Voice; a project by Vancouver based Dropframe Communications in which video cameras were given to Iraqis to tell their own story. There is a fundraiser this Saturday to pay for the cameras. Please consider going. 8pm, Soma, Main and Broadway.
