Waiting for Godot

Ten years I've waited for Godot. First heard about him when I studied Theatre of the Absurd in grade eleven and looked forward to him ever since. When I found out that he would be at the
Stanley Theatre starting March 29 I was stoked but the night of my excitement turned into anxiety. Was I going to understand this? Had I hyped it up too much? Had I drunk enough coffee? Was it actually going to happen?
Godot never showed up but I had a lovely time waiting it out with Vladimir and Estragon. They're such good people. They have that type of relationship that men only have with one another and women cannot emulate. Sure, Vladimir didn't help Estragon take off his boot but he gave him the last carrot and he did his best to remind him of yesterday's events. And Gogo was kind enough to suggest that Didi hang himself first because if the branch were to break after he successfully hung himself Didi would be in the world all by himself. And then waiting would take twice as long.
Pozzo and Lucky didn't seem to get along so well and Lucky didn't seem lucky at all. In fact, Lucky's state made my stomach turn. There was a glimmer of companionship or at least equal subjugation but Pozzo didn't have an open sore on his neck. And he wasn't falling asleep standing up.
From Estragon's brilliant blue eyes to Lucky's monologue to that one tree to the way they would gesture when they wanted to leave Waiting for Godot was a wonderful, moving experience. Definitely worth the wait.
Waiting for Godot is playing at The Stanley (2750 Granville Street) until April 23.

i went to see WFG too, and it was really good. i laughed a lot, and left the theatre feeling kinda depressed. I think Beckett would be happy with that.
