St. George Marsh Near Extinction
It's been a decade since I experienced the rush of the final bell dismissing me for summer holidays. The anticipation of heading to cottage country, swimming in lakes, and eating ice cream, almost unbearable in those final classroom moments. Lately, if I'm in a reminiscent mood I have dropped by the St. George Marsh Corner Store located on St. George and 28th. This unique venue provides so much more than retro penny candy, two dollar grab bags, and international soft drinks, but just like summer holidays some good things must come to an end. Last night was the final event for this curiosity shop / gallery / museum / supplier of mysterious treats and delights. The owners Jake and Gareth displayed the work of Wally Carver, who is a senior gentleman Gareth discovered while working at a Retirement Home. His "Buckin Horse Buns" show can be seen for the next two weeks before the store is closed down. The drawings suggest a regression into childhood with crayon depictions of cowboys and ponies. They are delightful and the bizarre setting only adds to their unusual sincerity.
The store was opened just over a year ago, but as Jake explained it often takes time for such a project to gather momentum and sustain itself. The retail aspect was primarily a front for some creative magic, like the ever-changing dioramas created by the owners and occasional poker night. One never knew what to expect at their exhibit openings, perhaps a coconut splitting ceremony or make-shift outdoor mini-putt course. This creative outlet will certainly be missed, especially if you have a sweet tooth like myself, although there are rumours of new possibilities with an emphasis on exhibitions. In the meantime, make an effort to get down to the St. George Marsh and support independent local endeavours.

Oh no! No No No! the Marsh is drying up! This is the worst news. Man, I should've gone up there more often. Why Vancouver, why?
