Sometimes Parties Aren't Fun

WomenInFilm2.JPG So I went to that Women in Film and Video party last night. And I hated it, though not because of anything specific. I love the venue (celebrities), everyone seemed nice, and I didn't mind the band (though, they performed a cover of Paris Hilton's Stars are Blind... which I think - I hope - was meant to be ironic). Everyone else was obviously loving the whole experience, but I just felt way out of place.

The truth is that with the exception of local writer/actress Sara Bynoe who I interviewed once-upon-a-time and whose one-woman fringe fest show from last year - Sparkle Bunny: The Last Raver Dancing - was hilarious, I didn't recognize anyone. I hate that feeling.

When I arrived, I got to jump the line, which I'm sure irked the assembled horde waiting to pay their $35 cover. When I left, plenty of them were still waiting, and I had the urge to go over to say, "You know, I hope you're in the industry, and that you know a lot of other people who are going to be at this party, or at least have brought some friends along, because if you haven't, this could suck." I didn't, of course. I think the fact that I didn't enjoy the party had more to do with me than with the party, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to other people next year. Alas, I just didn't have fun. I did get a nice compliment on my dress ($5 at Value Village, baby!), but other than that...
