111306_vandiy.jpgMy friend Cheylene runs the Vancouver DIY site, an open source resource for anyone into anything Do It Yourself. Anyone can post on the calendar as well as messageboard, and they also host zines (scan your zine and they will put it up). Too much of what we consume comes from third sources which have poor labour and environmental records. We live in an instant society where everything is dispoasable and devoid of meaning. The more we can re-aquaint ourselves with making our own things the more valuable they will be, to ourselves and others. I think there has been a sort of subconcious realisation of this in the last 5 years, as crafting, bookmaking, knitting, and even independent music have seen a resurgenc in popularity. This is good for Vancouver.
