This week in art, a weekly heads up on the Vancouver art scene.
Speaking of "distortions of anatomy", local artist Linda Findlay is opening a new show at the Jacana Gallery next week. "Soluble" will showcase Findlay's vivid paintings of deadly viruses, shown up-close and personal in big, bold color.
Findlay's studio is across the street from my house, so I visit it every year in the Eastside Culture Crawl and I am always enthralled with her work. There is something in it that satisfies my esthetic nature and also my inner geek. So that's what influenza looks like, eh? Oh, and ebola is actually kind of pretty...
Floating languidly on the canvas, these images seem very far removed from the 50 pt headlines and the chaos caused by the fallout of some of these killers, but as Findlay says, "Delicately beautiful, it is, at times, hard to imagine they are so tenacious and potentially deadly" and therein lies the attraction.
"Soluble" will open on February 1st and stay up until the 18th. The reception is actually on Saturday, Feb 3rd from 2 PM - 4 PM and the artist will be in attendance if you have any questions. You may want to bring your own SARS mask though. Not sure if they will have any on hand.
Image is Untitled courtesy of the artist. She doesn't say what virus it is, so I guess you'll have to go to the gallery to find out!
