Lowdown on Lowbrow Art at the JEM
Marcus Rogers created a 60 minute documentary featuring interviews with modern pop or lowbrow artists who create pieces that live outside of the boundaries constrained upon fine or traditional art. The doc was produced by Fountain Productions and covers the progression of Lowbrow art over the past few decades, including the more recent presence of female artists within the scene.
Tagged as bold, sexy, and vibrant, Lowbrow art comments on pop culture with novel juxtapositions that highlight the frequent ironies within our shifting culture. Though difficult to classify, you can likely expect innovative creations and perhaps a shock here and there when taking in this progressive lowbrow art.
The JEM Gallery is hosting a reception tonight that will showcase prints, art and artists from the film, which was aired on the Bravo network on January 7th. Head on over to the Lowdown mySpace page for a peek at the film's trailer. The release of the "Lowdown on Lowbrow Art" DVD will also be celebrated, and copies will be available for purchase at the reception tonight.
The exhibit at the JEM will contain works by the following artists: Robt. Williams, The Pizz, SHAG, Anthony Ausgang, Lisa Petrucci, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, NIAGARA, I, Braineater, 12 Midnite, Dirty Donny and The Pop Tarts.
The JEM, an acronym for Just East of Main, is nearing its two year anniversary and caters to a wide array of mediums including contemporary underground art, installations and digital media. They also sell locally hand-crafted items such as jewellery, ceramics, textile art, ,and skin care products.
