Trunk Gallery had their first art show at auto/ONE (1755 W. 8th Ave.), titled: Colour, Line and Form. In what is otherwise a high-end Import Car showroom, on the (near) Kits side of town just off Burrard, 7 of Vancouver's artists had a cooperative art-show off. In the presence of nearly 100 other visitors, who also had a free martini on the house, one could not help but marvel at the high tech and the artwork striking the lens. If you weren't an otherwise budding photographer representing one of Vancouver's coolest Blogs (winks and nods) you may be seen hanging with your friends - with drinks being just an excuse to hang out - conversing about what real-estate deals you've made last quarter, snapping some shots of the artwork there, or just pretending you're paying attention to everyone. Or, and this is speaking for myself, taking painstaking shots to make sure I can write about the artists' work. So, the details are as follows:

I saw the works of seven artist (in alphabetical order): Justine Andrew, Heidi Conrod, Jennifer Goodwin, Brie Neilson, Christopher Paul, Tanya Slingsby, and Carmelo Sortino. Speaking from my personal standpoint - albeit as a former ECIAD student in the mid-90s - I took the most liking to Tanya Slingsby's work which, while contextualizing itself in the impressionist and still-life traditions and aesthetics, possessed an almost apocalyptic air. I took a liking to her reconciliation of that apocalyptic note whilst holding on to the sincerity of seemingly-simple juxtaposition of color, shadow, tone. But i trust that there's so much more to see.

While i could continue the ramblings of a quasi-art-critic, i suggest you come up with your own impressions of the seven artists in this show. If you'd like to catch another night of some of this art-work among slick sportscar-action (slash, bring $100,000 down to begin a lease of one of our cars, thank you) don't worry: the show runs from May 10 to June 10, 2007. Again, the addy is: 1755 W. 8th Ave.)

Ha! Last night some friends o' mine stumbled into the legion in the wee hours. They were happy, completely tanked, and attempting to articulate something about very expensive cars in the middle of an art opening. Now it all makes sense, especially as I see one of them sipping a martini in your picture!!

Shirley -- i hear ya. let me tell you, i certainly wasn't drinking or planning to drink -- but i tell ya, as soon as I passed the doors to audo/ONE I was treated not only to a few stares, a server w/ martinis shaken and ready, but also plenty of awesome art. It's prolly why everyone else was also so stoked. It helps to dress up to these things, you don't have to flash fancy biz cards if you do. Jark.

Glad everyone had such a great time -- more to come in the future. ONE THING: if you want to come down and check us out, do so on West 3rd Ave, 'cause we're not on West 8th! -- 1755 W 3rd. 604.739.0800
