Designing Communication: VFS Open House Tonight

Interested to see other design students' work, I'll be heading over to the Vancouver Film School for their Digital Design program's open house, starting at 6 PM at the VFS Cafe on the corner of West Hastings and Homer Street tonight. Not only will the works of current students be on display, but the work of grads in the industry and Head of Department Sebastien de Castell will be showing as well. The program's online showcase highlights some of the most impressive examples its students have produced and gives you a little taste of what to expect tonight.

As a design student and enthusiast, I couldn't help but click on the flyer on my Facebook homepage advertising the event. I'm always interested in learning about the other art and design programs that are available around the city, plus I didn't even realize VFS had design branches other than film studies. However, at the speed the design world is changing and becoming extremely interdisciplinary and multifaceted, educational institutions have to offer an exhaustive range of courses and programs to keep up.

But wait, what's digital design? VFS describes the practice as the use of motion, print, or interactivity to communicate an idea, or solve a problem. In other words, you can see digital design at work in everything from music videos to web sites to magazines to video games, just as a few examples. VFS says that what makes their program unique is the fact that they integrate the professional world into the classroom, while providing students with one-on-one mentorship and a complete set of media and entertainment tools, enabling them to create to their full potential.
