Blim Arts Society Pays Homage to Politics and... Fish Tacos?

Blim Arts Society (197 East 17th Avenue at Main Street) is keeping busy this weekend with a couple of events catering to the activist and gourmand. Tonight's Friday film screening involves two politically charged films about the Berrigan Brothers, which will surely get you charged up for Saturday afternoon's Fish Party, Blim's nod to Baja cuisine, partying, and the fine art of tortilla making. Why no one has thought of this combination beforehand is beyond me.
Two Films About the Berrigan Brothers
The Trial of the Catonsville Nine
In the King of Prussia
Time: 7-11pm | Cost: $5 - 10 (sliding scale)
Despite these films screening on a Friday night -- thinking is the last thing I want to do at the start of a weekend -- the inner activist in me is considering this double-feature on the Berrigan Brothers, two ordained Catholic priests who used a radical religious approach to dispute the U.S.A.'s active role in the war effort. The films cover their affiliation with the Catonsville Nine and Plowshares Eight, two anti-war groups who broke into facilities and used their own blood and homemade napalm to destroy draft and conscription documents. As a result, they pissed off a bunch of people who happily scored them a few terms behind bars. Whether you're a grassroots poop-disturber or just want to avoid the rest of the world waiting in line for the new Harry Potter, then these flicks are worth a look.
Baja Fish Taco Party
Time: 3-6pm | Cost: $10-15 (sliding scale)
If you still insist on lining up for Harry Potter or if politics just ain't your thang, then you can stop by the Society on Saturday afternoon for the Fish Taco Party, where $10-15 will get you a special fish taco platter, Baja-style -- which, I've learned, is served with a heaping helping of cabbage in place of the typical lettuce accoutrement. All I can suggest is, make sure you're not seeing anyone special that evening. (You'll thank me later.) Desserts, cold drinks, and the explosive fun that comprises a typical fiesta will be in ample supply. Homemade tortilla-making seminars and even cactus box garden classes take place throughout the afternoon (the latter of which may not be a bad idea considering I've killed the only two cacti I've ever owned in my life).
For more information on both events, see www.blim.ca or call BLIM at (604) 872-8180.
