When you think of summertime outdoor movie screenings, you'd be forgiven if not much came to mind -- perhaps a fond memory of Brian "Godzilla" Salmi's brilliant "Granville Beach Theatre" experiment, or a recollection of Langley's Hillcrest Drive-In, closed in the fall of 2003 after a half-century run (... the Twilight Drive-In poised, however, on the cusp of rising from its ashes!) There was a time when the future looked slim for folks who like the stars to shine down on them while movie stars shine at them from the silver screen, but fortunately for outdoor film buffs it looks we've somehow managed to escape that grim alternate future so far, with its baby farms, murderous robot warriors and blasted desert landscapes!

Stanley Park was ravaged again this summer by Monsters in the Meadows, but if you missed it never fear -- the 5th annual (already?!) Labour Day Weekend Summer Silent Nights at Grandview Park is coming up at us at 8 pm every night this weekend, starting tonight with The Man Who Planted Trees and the Soldier's Tale!

Saturday night brings one of my all-time favourites, Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance, while Sunday's conclusion to this year's series will be Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin. Original live music will replace these film's original soundtracks (apologies to all, to all, to all, the Philip Glass (to all) fans out there, fans out there) as performed by the Eye of Newt Collective (practically the house band of the late Blinding Light!!), Adios and other guests under the direction of Stefan Smulovitz. Most importantly of all: this co-production of Radix, Rumble, Rime & Zula is FREE. (Hey, they earned the free press.)

Coming up next week is the 4th annual Indie Music Video Festival, but more about that closer to the date. Also, as xinit mentions -- only 27 more days until the VIFF! Stay tuned!
