Kitsilano.ca really broke some sad news today: After fifty-five years The Ridge Theatre's run is coming to an end.

That sucks. It's definitely going to create a void - one that neither the DVD, TiVO, or any of the other theatres or many film fests in Vancouver will be able to fill. The Ridge has it all: fast rotation and a crazy mix of movies - some old, some new, lots are international and many are leftfield - cheap concession, Spike & Mike's, premieres that get the theatre for themselves for an entire week... do other theatres offer a seniors rates?

Let's continue: comfortable seats, free parking, quick pre-movie promotions, suggestion box, balcony, probably the only non-downtown VIFF location, real butter, Movies for Mommies and a crying room.

And, on Christmas they're replaying the winners of the Cannes television festival. The cost will be $8 (the reel was just shown at The Vogue and entry was $30).

I'm sure there are more reasons why The Ridge is such a wonderful place.

According to The Vancouver Sun they may turn The Ridge into a first-run theatre like The Park and Fifth Avenue. Not the best consolation. At least the bowling alley stays.

Oh man, that's so sad. The Ridge was easily the best rep theatre in town, i'd say. A place where someone would give a little speech of introduction for 1st run movies, making movies into real Cultural Events.
