The Magic of Margaretha Bootsma is that she takes the safety of the proverbial tree-lined street and transforms it into something utterly alien. "15 Minutes from Downtown" is worlds away with it's red and orange whirlpools and a tiny sign indicating, unhelpfully, "rocks". Detailed imaged of trees and road signs ground the viewer, as does the signature bit of steel plate on almost all the paintings, while "encaustic colour-fields" fuel the imagination.

Her latest show, at the Bau-Xi Gallery was apparently a huge success, judging from the amount of work shown as sold on their site. The price point is way out of range for me, as is most of the stuff that turns up at Bau-Xi, but there is a huge red oak at the end of my street, with a road sign under it and occasionally bits of metal from the scrap shop across the street get strewn under it. If I don't wear my glasses when I walk the dog in the morning, I can have a little bit of her magic all to myself, for free.
