What with the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony last week, I felt it appropriate to conclude my series on Vancouver Riots with a discussion of the 2010 Olympics. Will this city party down hard or spiral into pandemonium and rage? Maybe both?

And now you're gonna die!

I can't say that I've ever been in a riot. Perhaps the closest I've come is that back when the 'Celebration of Lights' was called the 'Symphony of Fire', I was involved in a light scuffle. The melee lasted only a brief instant when a group of guys involved in a fight stumbled over, falling on me in the process. I simply pushed the gentlemen back into the circle of death and went on my way.

Whatever happened to Serve and Protect?

On the evening of June 14, 1994 thousands of Canuck fans took a deep breath, let a couple tears go, and then got down to the serious business of rioting.

In line for pop and chips...

Continuing on the theme of social disobedience, this week I'll take a look at Vancouver's very own Bloody Sunday, albeit with less Bono.

Police outside the Art Gallery
With the Olympics closing in, I thought it was high time that we looked at a great Vancouver tradition that we've long since forgotten. I'll be starting in chronological order in the year 1935 with the Battle of Ballantyne Pier, working my way towards the infamous Guns N' Roses riot of 2002. So join me in the next couple of weeks as we take a tour of Vancouver civil disobedience at it's finest (take notes!) and please remind me if I've forgotten any. I recommend keeping your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times.

Sunset at Second Beach

One of the benefits of being UBC Alumni is their seemingly random "Grad Gazette" email that trickles into my inbox every now and then. It usually contains lots of fluff pieces trying to make you miss UBC (nice try), but occasionally it has an article or two that spark my interest.

Apparently, UBC has just come into ownership of a series of photos of Stanley Park almost 100 years ago. Taken by a longtime employee of the UBC Library, Lionel Haweis founded Rosetti Photographic Studios which was thought to be in business during the 1910s.
