doggy.gifAntifreeze is deadly to pets, thousands of animals have died from ingesting the liquid which is used in all engines. The problem lies in the fact that antifreeze contains ethylene glycol which is extremely toxic to both people and animals. Adding to the problem is the fact that to an animal antifreeze smells sweet and enticing, and they also like the taste. Even the smallest amount of antifreeze is deadly, and 88% of animal encounters with the substance will be fatal.

But it doesn't have to be the case, and BC MLA Scott Fraser wants to do something about it.

vanc_skyline.gifA new report released by the research firm Demographica has stated that Vancouver is the 13th least affordable city in the world. Ahead of Vancouver are such cities as Los Angeles, Sydney, San Jose and others. All of the cities in the top (or bottom) 13 are either in Australia, the United States or the United Kingdom, Vancouver is the only Canadian entry. Regina is the most affordable city in Canada, closely followed by Winnipeg, Quebec City, and Saskatoon. Also the survey was done only for 6 countries; Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK and US. So it doesn't take into consideration any Asian countries.

Get a first life!

get_first_life.jpgEvery time I see all the hype around Second Life I ask myself; why do I want a Second Life when my first life is already challenging enough? Do I really want another world where I have trouble paying my bills? Where I worry about eating too much? Whether I drink too much?

Created by Vancouver "blogfather" Darren Barefoot, "Get a First Life" (scooped by Sean in Morning Brew) is a hilarious parody site of the popular and rapidly growing online community Second Life. It is just a one-page site (darn) but it already has some interesting quips; "first life is a 3D analog world where no server lag exists" or "What's this body thing and what's with all the dangly bits?"

couple_highq.jpgVancouver's Little Sisters bookstore has lost it's long-running censorship battle.

Yesterday the Supreme Court of Canada handed down it's decision denying the bookstore the right to upfront funding to allow the bookstore to continue it's fight against Canada Customs. Due to the bookstore's lack of financial resources they will have to discontinue their fight.

Presently, Canada Customs agents can confiscate and ban materials which are deemed to be obscene as they cross the border. Numerous books and comics being imported by the bookstore have been banned at the border, and some estimates state that 70 percent of all materials banned at the border are of a gay or lesbian nature.

equality.gifProtesters who occupied the Status of Women office in the Sinclair Centre downtown yesterday (reported this morning in Morning Brew) have obtained a meeting with federal Minister Beverly Oda to discuss their concerns.

The protesters who occupied the office yesterday were decrying the cuts to the Status of Women Canada which resulted in the closure of the Vancouver office. In December the federal government went back on campaign promises and cut $5 million (43 percent) from the budget of the organization. The cuts resulted in the closure of 12 of the 16 Status of Women offices across the country. There has been widespread outrage to the cuts and calls for the resignation of Minister Oda.

The protest was also intended to highlight the "erosion of equality rights" under the Harper government. The outcome of the meeting at this time is uncertain.

China Refuses to Lift Warning About Lower Mainland Private Colleges

200701021335000.jpgChina is refusing to soften it's stance and retract warnings against Chinese students going to Lower Mainland private colleges. A few weeks ago China issued a public warning after students in Ontario and British Columbia reported being caught up in separate scams involving two private colleges in Toronto and Vancouver. The Korean consulate issued a similar warning, posting a warning on it's website.

Regulation of this lucrative industry is fatally flawed: In 2004 the provincial government created a self-regulating body to monitor the industry, a Mr. Michael Lo was the chair of the agency's quality assurance committee. Last year it came to light that Kingston College was offering degrees from non-accredited universities and was forced to close it's doors. Kingston College's owner was Michael Lo.
