Sample, Sale, Greatness! Weekly Roundup

20070824_sugarlime necklace2.jpgThere are tons of sales to take advantage of this weekend. Whether you're looking for dresses or shoes, bags, tees, or jewelry - we've got a sale for you!

If you're looking for a great deal on vintage duds, the folks at Mintage (1714 Commercial Drive) are throwing yet another back alley sale! I was at the last one, and walked away with two garbage bags full of clothes for about $35! This time, the sale is even better! Fill up a bag with as much as you can, for just $5 a bag! Sale is one day only, August 25th, 10am-5pm, in the back alley behind the shop. My advice is to get there as early as you can for the best selection.

Read on for more sale listings - from Jorg & Olif, The Petri Dish, Riot, Kalena Shoes, Portobello West, Sugarlime and more. If you know of a sale that we've missed here, please leave us a comment and share your tips!

Designfile: Chulo Pony

20070822_Chulo_Pony_boucle_Small.jpg
Chulo Pony, the fashion line brainchild of Nettwerk Records, has quickly become one of Vancouver's hottest clothing labels. Their quirky dresses, tops, bottoms, and coats are all must-have staples in many locals' wardrobes. They've also got a growing celebrity following, including Canadian supermodel Noot Seear, Chloe Sevigny, Anne Heche, Sarah McLaughlin and comedienne Sarah Silverman. I have yet to purchase my first Chulo Pony piece, but their f/w 07 offering may change that!

Each season the team at Chulo Pony - Nettwerk's Creative Director John Rummen, Art Director Crystal Heald and Creative Director Chris Kopeck - work with a writer to create an intricate tale that serves as a thematic muse for the entire collection.

This fall, the collection is centred around a young 16th century piratess named Grace O'Malley. Grace was a "spirited young lass" who married twice by the time she was twenty years old - only until she gained title to her new husbands' castle - and gave 'em the old heave ho. Not one to heed her father (he said she could never go to sea because her long hair would get in the way) she chopped off her locks and went off to become a pirate.

Chulo Pony's take on the legend of Grace O'Malley is a young "Pyrate Queen" by the name of Claire O'Grady. She plunders ships for clothes, not gold - and whenever she gets into trouble, she can't stop cutting her hair. Read on for more details and pictures!

Stripping for Charity at Be Bare, Aug 16th

20070815_BeBare01.jpg
I've scored press passes to Be Bare, a fashion auction that promises to be the 'naughtiest' in the city. Why so naughty? Well, perhaps because people bid for the clothes directly off of the models...who then proceed to strip down as each item of clothing finds a winning bid.

Great fashions. Hot models (guys and girls). Stripping down to reveal sexy undies. Have I got your attention yet? Read on for all the details...

Slick Chic Agency Up and Running

20070730_SlickChick2.JPG

What happens when four of Vancouver's up and coming designers put their heads together and brainstorm? They come up with a smashing idea - the Slick Chic Agency, Vancouver's first ever collective wholesale agency that is 100% run by designers.

Who are these innovative ladies? Tabitha Savoie (Togs Design), Jenny Yen (CiCi/Hylas & Nymph), Fiona Louie (Filou Designs) and Brendalyn Avender (BPA Metalcraft). Slick Chic Agency bridges the gap between the designer and retailer - sales rep Julie Chung provides buyers with convenience and service, while giving the designers quick access to daily feedback and support.

All four designers have been on my radar for a while - whether at Shop Cocoon, Portobello West or Spend on Trend, I'm always drawn to their designs. My mom and I were at Portobello yesterday and I picked up a lovely H&N denim zip-front skirt, a total steal at just $20 (thanks Jenny!) I also have a supersoft fleece Togs dress that is perfect for chilly fall days (or rainy summer ones).

Sample! Sale! Greatness! July 27, 2007

Okay, 'tis the month of summer sales and almost every store in town is jumping on the bandwagon. If you're looking for some sweet deals on dresses, tees, skirts and shorts, sandals and more - now is the time to break out your wallet and get shopping!

My mom is coming to visit me for the weekend, and what's the first thing we're doing? Pounding the pavement, hitting the streets in search of that perfect little summer dress, or another pair of shoes to add to my collection. My mom's a fashionista too, and when she's in town we always make time for a little mother-daughter retail bonding time.

If you're looking for the best places to shop this weekend, read on for all the details! I promise, you won't be disappointed.

Review: Nick & Juanita - Livin' in my dreams

A while ago, during Dancing on the Edge, I was lucky enough to see Tara Cheyenne-Friedenberg's newest solo work, Nick & Juanita. This hilarious dancetheatre piece had the audience laughing great big belly laughs, from start to finish. Tara is a consummate performer. She shines on stage, filling up the entire space with her intense presence. She commits wholeheartedly to each role she takes on, infusing every cell in her body with all the little nuances that really bring a character to life. Read on for a full review of the show...
