It's tougher today to say exactly where you stand on the whole American 'Defenders of Democracy/Evil Empire' thing. Especially as Canadians who've always had to deal with living on the elephant's back. No matter what your conclusions are, as Canadians there's bound to be some hypocrisy. A lot of left-wingers in Kits still enjoy their Starbucks while a whole wack of right-wingers out in Langley still vote for universal health care.

A good start to finally deciding for yourself is to go and check out Linda McQuaig at the Maritime Labour Centre (1880 Triumph Street) next Tuesday (May 8th) who is going to be reading from her book, Holding the Bully's Coat.

Don't expect an unbiased approach here though. McQuaig is a good researcher but she isn't friends with everyone. I caught an interview with her at the office yesterday on ROB TV (of all places) and it was as much of a set-up as the classic bait'n'switch. They roasted her. But ROB TV is also Conrad Black's biggest fan club who, by the way, said on national radio that McQuaig should be horsewhipped. Go figure.

Whether you buy into this junk here, or a more secular take on Anti-Americanism, it's a worthwhile event for anyone interested.

And, to set the record straight. I have American friends. I can find Tulsa on a map. And I've been known to hop over the border now and again to grab some good American grease. But you don't see me in Afghanistan.

Picking what I like and don't like, typical Canadian eh?
