Pender Island publisher Island Folds has got a book launch tonight at Sophia Books for The Diamond, a fresh comic book produced by their latest artist import, Jim Stoten. Stoten is an amazing UK artist who has drawn for such illustrious publications as The Guardian, Cream Magazine, Dazed and Confused, NME, Amelia's Magazine and Time Out. His work totally reminds me of a lush combination of Gunsho, and Yellow Submarine art stylings.
The title of the new book (The Diamond) is appropriate, coming from such a little gem like Island Folds. Started just about a year ago by prolific west coast artist Luke Ramsey and his partner and certified nutritionist Angela Conley, the publishing house also hosts a residency programme, averaging one artist a month. Invited artists take care of their transportation, and are treated to a tranquil work space, a healthy environment, and excellent food that is good for you. Most of the books are handmade and/or use local resources on Pender Island. (How cool is that?)
Luke and Jim will be signing books and doodling with whomever joins in.
