New Orleans is Sinking

What do the Terasen Gas deal, BC's mountain pine beetle, Canada's not so Cold (because the ice is melting) War with Denmark, and Hurricane Katrina all have in common? Global Warming and the coming energy crisis.

Okay, so this may not be very Vancouver related, even though it affects our gas prices which in turn affects political decisions. For example, will BC benefit from this disaster? The Province Money section sure thought so! All that wood! And all those unpaid duties too. Will we put tariffs on oil at a time like this? Will we increase production?

I'm sorry, but I just really needed to get this off my chest. The headlines said "America's Tsunami" while, even though this is indeed a tragedy, it appears that thousands of Americans equal 250,000 Asians. Also, has anyone else, besides of course the ever-on-the-ball bloggerati, noticed that everyone in the pictures of New Orleans is black? I also just have to link to the Tyee's article, hey the that's Vancouver... right?

It's this vicious cycle: Oil running out - invade Iraq which has huge oil reserves but no WMDs- cut funding to hurricane prevention, so we can pay for the war - send National Guard troops to 'stabilize' the insurgency- so we can continue to drive our cars- which causes global warming- which leads to hurricanes- which leads to a shortage of troops to help aid in relief of said hurricane- which leads to high gas prices- which leads to...Iran, Syria, Venezuela?

Which leads to fucking chaos. Its like Somalia, and the army is treating it that way. Will this finally bring Bush down? After the hardly mentioned Downing Street Memo, to the hardly mentioned Valeri Plame affair, to Hurricane Cindy Sheehan's Camp Casey? Will it be Kanye West who ignites revolution? Now Canadians are being asked to drive 5% less! It takes a hurricane to realise that we need to drive less? Hubbard's peak wasn't clear enough? US support for the illegal occupation of Palestine didn't give us any clues? Did 9/11 only wake up Mark Wahlberg's character in I Heart Huckabees?

Castro offers medical aid! I wonder if the reverse would happen. Or maybe it doesn't have to. According to Truthout, Cuba was so well prepared when hurricane Ivan hit, that they didn't even need a curfew and no looting happened. Doctor's even knew who needed Insulin!
