The VPL has books and it lets you take them home for free. It also has free Internet and hosts things like Media Democracy Day and, this week, Speak Up. It's as if the library wanted us to be, like, smart. And even though they're such big fans of books they're not so keen on us being book-smart and/or believing everything we read. They want us to be street-smart and question all that info.

The Speak Up series is all about the massive amount of information, knowledge and growth that is present in this particular moment in history. Through lectures and discussions it will give you a new way to filter the issues surrounding knowledge (i.e. Who owns it? Do corporate sponsorships influence the development of new knowledge?).

Tonight there are two presentations. At the Oakridge branch Who Owns Your Genes? and at the central branch there will be a discussion on drug company interests vis-a-vis your health.
For a complete listing of the remainder of the events please go to the Speak Up site.
