Councillors Speak Out on Port Mann Bridge

Ain't life just full of surprises? I woke up this morning to
CBC Radio 1 announcing that all ten city of Vancouver councillors had expressed concern about the proposed Twinning of the Port Mann Bridge. Dreaming? Definitely. But the facts remain the facts . All ten councillors have doubts about the "benefits" the expanded bridge is supposed to offer.
Gateway executive director Mike Proudfoot preached his usual spiel about how increasing the traffic flow on these bridges WON'T bring more traffic to Vancouver. And that it is NECESSARY to improve bus service, carpooling, and bike traffic. Yeah right, Mike. Ignoring the fact that bridge traffic hasn't increased in the last decade, why would we want to increase the amount of pollution and car traffic flowing into our city which is already dealing with major congestion issues?
Anyhow, it's pretty amazing to see our city's representatives in a rare moment of unity towards an issue, especially one which rams its bumper in the face of "progress." But is it all for naught? Mikey was sure to note that the councillors may be ten, and he only one, but he's a provincial boy, and the councillors are just municipal kids, and so he still might be able to build whatever the fuck kind of bridge he wants.
