Mutiny at the Cafe

Like the four shining heroes raising Old Glory at Iwo Jima, like Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the chapel door, like John Carlos and Tommie Smith raising their hands at the Olympics in defiance; every act of resistance is a battle won, no matter how big or small. That is why, to my delight, walking past Blenz on Hastings to the Spartacus Books grand re-opening, I discovered a few notes taped to the door. Four employees, sick of slave wage labour and an ungrateful boss, up and left. Walked out, en masse, in the ultimate act of defiance against corporate middle management.

For that one moment, anyone who has ever had a shitty boss stood and rejoiced. Every one who has worked for minimum wage stood together in defiance. We raise our glass to you.

Hey Red Annie, unions are the answer for people that would like to stay at their job. These are probably kids - fresh out of high school, travellers, with more ambition than slinging mochas - so their efforts are best left for other things besides securing a future at Blenz. And it's a personal thing, something that unions aren't so adept at handling.

Bloody awesome! Did they actually lock the doors, after taping that note to it?

Way to stick it to the 'man', ex-Blendz employees. Perhaps the manager in question will learn some respect, if only through his bottom line.

I love this. Too many people stay in crappy jobs with crappy bosses, blinders on, thinking that they MUST put up with it, resulting in bitter people who feel like victims of their lives. If they are a bunch of kids, right out of school, they were raised right....full of self worth and confidence. I hope Scott was on a "coffee break" and had to run the place all on his own until closing that day and the next!

Yah, I'd have to hear what Scott had to say. If he f*ed up, I guess he could apologize and learn something. Or even give his staff a raise, hire them back and try this whole thing again, this time under blog, public, media and corporate scrutiny- can you imagine the publicity for Blenz. But if he's one of these control freak guys who sees his staff as 'resouces' rather than human beings, or uses bullying as a management strategy, or critisizes without ever thanking his staff for a job well done- then I think it might be time for for one of those touchy feely human relationship courses. Good luck former Blenz dudes, and good luck Scott- you can change!
And greetings from Victoria, BC, also home of Blenz.

Its not the first time something like this happened. I used to be the night manager at the Blenz at broadway/granville, and I quit along with some other employee's due to the owner's blatent disregard for Canadian labor laws and health code. Blenz simply doesn't regulate its frandchise properly. If you have the money, you can buy one and bend the rules to your liking.

Word of advice, don't go to the Broadway and Granville location. I believe it is still owned and operated by Rosa Kim. Reasons? Rats in the back, coffee is brewed and served until the container is empty (sits on heater for 6+hrs at times), they serve bread that "looks" like it can still be eaten (2+ weeks old), she doesn't give employee's breaks, schedules them for shifts they cant work, gives little to no raises off minimum wage. I was a evening manager doing cash outs and closings and was only paid $8.20/hr, and I had to put up with the gripes from the customers complaining about moldy bread and lousy coffee, as well as my fellow employees being treated unfairly.

Myself and a few other employee's quit and told the owner, Rosa, to let us leave in peace or else we'd report her to the better business bureau and the health inspectors. Tried calling Blenz head office to complain about the situation and all they said was "Does Rosa know you're doing this? We're going to have to let her know"

Shocked but pleasantly surprised to see that uprising's can happen at other Blenz locations. Maybe the company will start acting in a more respectable manner now and regulate. Some of the drinks taste pretty good, but whats the point if they're presented in a pile of $hit.

Posted by: Genevieve at February 14, 2006 9:41 AM | Quote Comment

I dunno how many of you have ever run a place like that. And I don't know what problems Scott might have.

But I can tell you that all high school or college students are not model employees. Some of them steal from the till. Some of them will spend their whole shift drinking cup after cup of free coffee. Some of them show up to work an hour late on a consistent basis. Some of them don't show up at all. And the nicer you treat them, the more comfortable they feel with ripping you off.

Most of us are probably college-educated professionals, and a stern or even harsh management style would be totally wrong for us. But all employees are *not like us*.

I don't mean to imply anything specific about this situation, I am just saying that there is such a thing as crap high school employees, as well as crap bosses.

Hopefully these employees tried to talk things out with their boss before leaving him like that. But as a past Blenz employee, I feel their pain. I worked at a different location, and I know each location is different, but this company really needs to get their act together and learn how to do things right. Kudos to these employees. Perhaps this will be a wake-up call to the company.

Then again, perhaps not.

Okay, I am sick and tired of the Scott bashing. I used to work there and he was fine with me. Even if he was a dick to them this is not how you act. If you must quit immediatly then fine, give your notice to him, not on the window and don't come in the next day. This is the kind of attitude you expect from junior high kids. And the sad thing is that I know these 4 and I would have expected better things from them. Welcome to the working world where you won't get along with everyone, and like every job that you're asked to do. Welcome to the real world guys. And also, signing your last names? Gonna be a bit hard to get another job now isn't?

A friend of mine ran the Blenz on Robson. We racked it dry. Anyone giving $7.50 and hour and expecting them to watch everything like a hawk is insane. I know you are supposed to have ethics, but you learn those, they can't get taught. He let it all slide and didn't give a shit, pay people or expect the same.

Posted by: Me at February 23, 2006 6:31 PM | Quote Comment

I've worked for Blenz and Starbucks and let me tell you this..the morals and values at Starbucks are far higher and so is the pay. You're basically doing the same thing at both places so why not work for a company with a better reputation? I know plenty of Blenz employers and not only are they demanding and bossy, they never put real time and effort to increase their customer service, all they do is expect perfection after paying someone minimum wage. Trust me, Starbucks is better!

I hope that you talked to your boss(Scott) about the issues that brought you to this action. Put your concerns in writting and give that to your boss then ask for a good time to discuss the issues and likely solutions
if you get no consideration from this action. Address the same letter to the company (Scotts boss) and let him know you have done so. Also be professional about this action ie: a typed letter or at least handwritting that is above grade 6 level would give you more credibilty. Other wise a badley written letter makes you look imature lazy and not worth an above minimum wage. I applaude that you stood up for your rights I would have respected it more if it was done in a more mature and professional manner. I hope you come away from this experience with some valuable lessons that you can take to your next place of employment.

Hey guys!

Someone forwarded this to me! I happen to work at Blenz (not that location). Since we are tlaking about shittyness let me say a little something. I have worked there for about 7 months (I go to school full time). They don't pay overtime, no raise, no benefits, customer is ALWAYS right and the mgr will make sure you feel like shit about the situation, sexual harrassment from customers is perfectly acceptable to mgmt, as well as abusive treatment by regular customers. The location I work at is unsanitary with tons of flies, no plastic gloves for food, no dates on food items, and lack of decent policies. There is no mgmt or owner they go off an do whatever they like all day with the occasions of them sitting across the street/or in random cars spying on employees. There are no breaks and they enjoy having employees work 10 hours per day. NO breaks! you better be a smoker. Finally, on a parting note I'm quitting in a few weeks and it feels excellent. This is one shitty job I will never forget. Baristas unite! hahahhahaha. No but seriously if there are other Blenz or crap coffee shop employees out there dont be afraid to tell them like it is!

What some of the commenters here don't seem to realize is that this sort of management behaviour (inconsiderate, ungrateful, untrusting) is not unique to the bottom of the labour food chain -- it can happen at *any* level. Bravo, Blenz crew, for taking a stand.

This is what happens when you don't unionize.

Without a union, the owner will just re-open the next day. The next batch of workers will see that all rebelling does is create a minor inconvenience for the owner.

In effect, these ex-employees have just made it worse the labor market in their area.

Actually, to the kids that put the letter up, it probably feels just like a great military victory. Maybe they'll have a long hunt for a new job, maybe another one is right around the corner. Who really knows? What really matters is that at that moment they knew what true freedom tasted like.

(not to nitpick, but the Iwo Jima flag raising photo you alluded to had six soldiers, not four.)

@Ellie - Not really. Vancouver is a big city, not some tiny one horse town. Its highly unlikely their next job would know anything about this unless they were in someway specifically acquainted with what went on.

And sometimes, things like this need to be done. Quietly quitting by giving your notice and leaving while upstanding and appropriate doesn't get the message across in a bad situation. 4 employees up and quitting (Especially if its the whole staff) may actually clue the company in that there is a problem.

Posted by: Matt at March 20, 2006 9:08 AM | Quote Comment

Posted by: Shunaway at March 20, 2006 9:08 AM | Quote Comment

Granted, we don't know the other side of the story, but assuming what was written is true, I agree this was brilliant. I've worked in a lot of low-paying, low-level jobs, and the truth is, you get shit on. It isn't fair and it shouldn't happen, but if you complain? You just get shittier assignments until you quit or get fired (regardless of the quality of work). To everyone saying they should have a union, or they should have talked this out with the boss, or they should have gone higher up and complained...guess what? It doesn't work. Not in an entry level, minimum wage job. You're expected to shut up and take it or be replaced. This, at least, brings some light to the situation and lets people know what was going on, and maybe new hires will think twice about working there. Maybe Scott will even think twice about being a dick to his employees. I doubt it, but just maybe...!

Posted by: AMG at March 20, 2006 9:34 AM | Quote Comment

That's awesome.

Question to all the people who are talking about unions: it sounds like this place is in Canada. Is it easier to join a union there? Because here in the states, there are certainly no unions for minimum-wage workers. I've never once worked a job where I had the ability to unionize and I'm a college graduate (a recent one, anyway).

Personally I see them a mafia thuggs wnating you to pay them so they dont beat you up. They dont REALLY help anyone, and just take a lot of your money for them to use on their own junkets. I have not yet found one union any better then that they "protect you from".

This reminds me of a time I went to a restaurant in Atlanta only to discover it had gone out of business and a sign posted in the window that said, "F*** you all, up the a**"

I'm not sure if that was a sign from the owner angry at the community for the failure of his restaurant or left by an angry staff member finally getting the last word.

Either way, it was hilarious to me.

Fantastic! Congratulations to those workers. That takes real bravery, putting your money where your mouth like that. You're my heroes of the year so far and I'll put you on my blog and try to spread the word. Congratulations.

The note doesn't complain about "slave labor wages"

1. a wage means you are not a slave
2. as this note points out, people are free to choose if they don't like their job.

these people just wanted to be respected. lacking that respect, they made a personal choice to forgo employment for personal satisfaction. good for them.

Forget about unions - why aren't employees fighting for the employee to come first. Why aren't they fighting to be heard, recognized, and trained. Why aren't they fighting to come before customers. Why can't people understand that happy employees makes happy custoemrs. I am sick and tired of going into stores only to find employees that aren't empowered, engaged and happy to be there. Shouldn't employers focus on employees - first?!

Posted by: Jill at March 28, 2006 6:21 AM | Quote Comment

They don't need a union. Just treating the staff like human beings would squelch most union talk before it started, but most companies are too stupid and pig headed and they end up alienating their employees and the next thing they know they're looking at strikes and collective bargaining.

This is a throw away job anyway. It's not even anything that would get listed on a resume.

Wow. I'm glad nothing like that ever happened to me when I was an assistant at a coffee shop.

I do feel some bit of empathy for the manager of that shop though, no matter how bad he was. That's just cold blooded.

"a typed letter or at least handwritting that is above grade 6 level would give you more credibilty. Other wise a badley written letter makes you look imature lazy and not worth an above minimum wage."

At least they spelled every word correctly.

Blogged and blogrolled.

People need to realize that labour is a commodity; too often i've seen people taken advantage of because they thought they could be replaced cheaply.

Not QUITE as true as you'd think.

Posted by: raincoaster at April 1, 2006 9:53 PM | Quote Comment

Such an empty gesture. Labor is replaceable.

Posted by: Thomas at April 2, 2006 8:28 AM | Quote Comment

Having been a barista and managing a cafe i can see the satisfation anyone would get. its not abouth the fact the labor is replaceable, its about the fact that for a week their boss will have to work his ass off keeping the place up. filling in shifts an comimg up with new scheduals. its about that fact that, that place will have had 4 ppl up and go and be remembers as that if only be employees. evindently its not about labour, not about slave wages or a fukking union.(cafes in canada dont have unions) it was about upper management doing thier job, for in this case a lack there of.
get up and walk. make em scramble. In bc especially its nto hard to find a coffee shop job. why shovel shit?

Posted by: xi at April 2, 2006 8:39 PM | Quote Comment

So what - labor is replaceable - what about all of the damage this type of blog and communication has done to the brand - I would never enter a Blenz - let alone talk positively about it! For anyone who thinks labor is replaceable - give your head a shake - sure it is but at what cost!

Umm, no, they gave notice that they quit - most definitely quit, and they even put it in writing for the boss, and now the world, to see.

It's been a long time since I worked in a cafe for minimum wage, thankfully, but I've never forgotten those years of toil, abuse, belittlement, and the feeling of finally seeing clearly the ugly face of "the boss."

Much love and solidarity to these folks from a Montreal teacher who wasn't always as well-paid as he is now, and may the bosses and their toadies rot.

Good job! There is an overwhelming amount of managers and "team leads" out there today that believe it is their god-given duty to treat their employees like crap. All the union talk is kind of useless though... I'm in a union in Alberta that recently were locked out, and there were so many backroom deals and so much shady behavior that it was all a waste of time in the end. Makes me wish the Teamsters owned the union here!

Worst. Coffee shop. Ever.

Or at least it was. Maybe Blenz will finally get their act together and shove Scott out the door. How this place managed to stay in business for as long as it has is a mystery to me.

It's not like there's a shortage of competition out there. Even if you don't want to go to one of the 238 Starbuckses on Robson, there's still other coffee.

Posted by: Livewire at April 15, 2006 8:36 PM | Quote Comment

I learned about this from a union brother's blog. We did some agit prop work on Starbucks. They have may be two or three unionised Star Bucks. One in NYC and one in Vancouver. It made me think if my chatting with my local 7-11 staff is abusive. One never knows when one is being offensive. My low paid job it terrible. The boss is always threatening us with dismissal. Ya I think young workers may just not know how to work. But also all bosses are bad by the nature of the relationship. About unionists spending union money keep up the pressure some of us are honest unionists but we need pressure on the union bosses too.

this is the great idea ... more people should stand on what they believe in and drink coffee as often as possible ... even at the expense of the middle manager ... keep it on

While we at blenz do sympathise with the current outpouring of sympathy towards the employees of this local franchise, we cannot and willnot sanction their actions as they did not go through the proper channels to discuss the indescretions brought up with their "resignation letter".

But it will please you to know that "Scott" has now been temporarily relived of his duties and is under review by the head office here in vancouver over theses allegations.

At Christmas I was offered a new job and I went to management and 'offered my resignation' on the grounds that they were doing nothing with my department. I mean seriously I did hardly more than two days work a week and was still getting paid.

They were neglecting the business sector that we served and it was obviously having an effect on our image. As we had recently been aquired by another company this wasn't supprising because senior management didn't understand what we did.

The response I had in an interview with a very senior member of management (prompted by my letter) was "we hope sometime this comming year to begin forming a strategy." Having spoken to people since I can't say I am sorry, I don't believe they have done anything.

Now I work really hard, infact so hard I feel my head will explode, but I work in a freindly environment and have satisfaction in my job. :)

That message from Blenz, was probably posted by Mark West, one of the top people from Blenz head office.

Fisrt of all: What do you mean with sanctioning the people who went about doing this? I am not an idiot, when i wrote that protest banner,I was completely aware of what I was doing. You canot take any legal action against us. The note does not make any references to Blenz whatsoever, it was purely a way of manifesting how we were not being tretes fairly by Scott. You say 'we cannot and will not sanction their actions', if you cannot saction our actions, then why bother saying 'and will not sanction their actions' , trying to sound like a good samaritan.

Second: Scott was never temporarily relieved from his duties, because he owns that franchise.

I met with Mark West, a week after the incident, and i told him there and i told him now. We were not complaining about Blenz, hahaha that would be a completely new case, this was just a way of dealing with bad management. It's just a minimum wage job to get you through school, we didn't walk out the House of Commons.

Thanks 4 the support.

So awesome. I wish someone would make that point to our boss. He's always on at us to be faster, work better etc, well maybe if he wants more from us he should actually treat us like human beings. Show some real care for his employees, rather than just pretending to be all buddy with them but treating them like robots who are only there to make his profit higher and can have their hours cut at any time...

Also, about unions -- they're becoming pretty much extinct here in Australia, after our PM's recent Industrial Relations reforms...
