And Big Box Retailers For All...

Walmart! Purveyors of inexpensive bulk products as made by underpaid human-rights-denied overseas workers! Hey, we all need to cut corners here and there, in order to feed our little 'uns. Our kids deserve the cheapest! Our previous city council had voted down the possibility of Walmart and a big box Canadian Tire (way bigger than the Can Tires which are in Vancouver now) moving in on SE Marine near Main. They thought that traffic congestion, air pollution, and mom and pop businesses getting shut down were good reasons to deny us the cheapo goods we desire. Well our new NPA dominated council has now opened the doorway to progress, traffic, and plastic products the public needs.
The stores aren't moving in quite yet, since they do need to apply for approval. But the motion to let them apply seems tantamount to placing a Welcome mat on the alleged pieces of real estate. If / when the Walmart / Canadian Tire arrives it'll be the first big box retail store within Vancouver city limits. Sharpen those scissors to cut that shiny ribbon, folks.

In my opinion, if the approval for these stores goes through, it will be so sad. The argument that people will choose to take public transit to a BigBox-neon light gleaming, prices-falling Walmart is ludicrous...is public transit going to help them lug their cheap goods home for the 3.25$ they pay? I'm certainly not planning on taking a cross-town bus to buy my snow tires at Canadian Tire...hells no! Of course traffic will be a problem, but so will the morality of the people who feel it is ok to shop there BECAUSE IT'S CHEAP! It will do nothing but close small businesses who need your money much more than an American Billionaire does, and encourage other big boxes to open, and pretty soon you've got a strip mall with shitty outlet stores in the middle of a wonderfully-diverse urban city.... seriously folks, say no to Meth, Crack and WalMart, no good can come of them.
