Watson House, its Elementary

072606_mole_hill.jpgI feel the need to counterbalance my last two hate-itude soaked posts with a dose of some good news, albeit restrained and tinged with a slight yellow stain of skepticism. And this despite the fact I haven't yet unleashed the venom stored in my cheeks after the City gave the green light to Big Box retailers on Marine Drive. Its giving me sour face.

Mole Hill, the home of the Dr. Peter AIDS Centre, geothermal heating, 4 Cooperative Auto Network parking stalls, and an alley beautification experiment, will now feature Watson House, an eight-bedroom restored heritage house for mentally ill teenagers run by Coast Mental Health Foundation.

While on one hand we seem to be leaning towards a US-style justice system of more jails, while Dunbar residents reject a proposal for a treatment centre, and while we continue to tear down Single Room Occupancy buildings, Watson House is a token gesture but a much needed one.

whoever was in charge of the alley beautification project really got it right, it is *so* beautiful.

Its amazing in this age of sky high realestate prices that we have a place like molehill, to bad its just a block. Last summer I came across a "alley sale" there and all the neighbors had stuff out and the vibe was so light and friendly it made me quite happy for the rest of the day.
