Bye-bye Biltmore

Growing up in East Vancouver the neon lights of the Biltmore are just as much of my growing up as the smorgasbord place and those two Dragon restaurants (remember it had a massive neon dragon out front??). Or the Lunatic Fringe. I never went into those places but I always stared at them in wonder.

The Biltmore has slipped into the realm of those other marking establishments: the Biltmore has disappeared.

Not physically, mind you, but now it's a HoJo. *Tears*

The Biltmore always looked so regal for the neighbourhood it was in. Most probably because of it's height and the never burnt-out lights that proclaimed to the city from almost any vantage point that it was The Biltmore and though it might not be lord of a bountiful land it was still lord. It had karaoke, you know.

All the motels along Kingsway have all given me the creeps, especially the 2400 Motel, because who stays on Kingsway when visiting Vancouver... there's gotta be something fishy going on. But let's not think about that. Instead let's bid farewell to another nostalgic landmark.

Hehe, I had to pause for a minute to decipher "HoJo" but I got it :p That sucks though, are they/did they rennovate it to look all um... HoJo-y? They've done that to several old motels in the lower mainland within the last couple of years as well, although I think in those cases it was really for the better...

I don't know if they've done any renos. I don't even know why I know that the Biltmore is now a HoJo. All I know is that they've changed the sign to Howard Johnson and now it's "Howard Johnson Plaza." Maybe I should go in and do a site inspection.

Remember the Mr. Sport?

The 2400 is actually really nice inside!
Adieu, dear Biltmore. I have been mourning this each time I drive by.

The people who tried to blow up the Space needle in Seattle on Y2K?

I also remember Mr Sport and that sketchy club "Night Flight" adjacent to it. Who could forget their tacky sign?
