Housing (Updated)

101506_squat.gifIt appears as though the homeless issue in Vancouver is coming to a sort of critical mass. Last month I told you about a new report by Pivot Legal Foundation called Cracks in the Foundation. This week The Tyee covers a new report by The Canadian Policy Research Network called Social Sustainability in Vancouver.

The Republic takes on Woodwards and Vision Vancouver's lack of vision on the issue.

A slick, new website called Stop Homelessness has popped up in time for homelessness awareness week, a week of photo ops and "cultural activities". Meanwhile Sam "I give prostitutes drugs out of the back of my van" Sullivan has put up a fun little survey on how to deal with Public Disorder, although no attempt is made to prevent the Fast and the Furious bridge and tunnel clones from shooting up nightclubs and racing their pimped-up G-rides down our streets.

And lastly, the Anti-Poverty Committee is holding nothing back as it prepares to occupy an undisclosed abandoned building to say "Buy it, or Guard it". A demo will take place at Pigeon Park on Sunday, October 22nd.

101906_welfare.jpgThis column keeps growing, kind of like the number of homeless.

If the squat is too hardcore for you a forum called "Affordable Housing - Healthy Communities: Looking at Solutions to Vancouver's Affordable Housing Crisis", takes place at the West End Community Centre, 870 Denman Street, from 12 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 22.

Today's issue of The Only reported that the Liberals finally came up with some sort of housing plan after drastically slashing social spending during their first year. They came up with a subsidy akin to some spare change and pocket lint. For example, a family of three earning 10,000 will get $287 a month. I make $15,000 and I feel like I'm double-dutching with the poverty line. A family of three? How much is a 2 bedroom apartment? A wee bit more than $287 me thinks.

But you can't qualify for a subsidy if you don't have a child, you're on welfare, don't have a bank account, live in assisted housing, or are a recent immigrant. In other words, the people who need it most. You'd think it was the landlords that needed the subsidy the most, because that's whose getting it, 40 million of it.

On top of that, ex-real estate developer Rich Coleman announced that the Province would be building 450 units over the next 35 years, even though their own studies show that they need to build 3,000 a year! Thanks Richy Rich.

Tim Stevenson this week has called for a moratorium on evictions of low-income hotel residents. Call or email the mayor and councillors to let them know how you feel: mayorandcouncil@vancouver.ca

I forgot to tell you about Raise The Rates, referring to Welfare rates. While on the site I found a game! A homeless game! Search for bottles, food, beg for change, get thrown out of coffee shops, have a shower in the church. Awesome.

Also, check out this website created by homeless people to give them a forum to tell their stories. Its called Homeless Nation and features podcasts, video, blogs, a forum, and a section on resources, including Vancouver.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
101706_vanoc.gifAll this comes after months of headlines revealing case after case of 2010 budget overrruns. I hate to say to the 65% who voted yes, but I told you so. For example, the Southeast False Creek Athlete's Village was originally designed with 1/3rd middle-income housing. The NPA then slashed the requirement, claiming the project would lead to financial ruin. According to the NPA, COPE was "plundering" the city's $1.3 billion Property Endowment Fund, but new finance figures show that there is actually a 14.5 million dollar surplus. While COPE is calling for the NPA to use the surplus immediately for social housing, but instead, they are giving the developers a density bonus!

And they keep on building condos. Condo after condo with hip and sexy marketing that will sit empty because half of them are just investments. Which leads us to the threat of a housing bubble, which I know absolutely nothing about. Please see the wonderful Vancouver Housing market Blog.

notice how right-wingers always point to the fact that you're "left wing", or a liberal, or a socialist, as if it were a bad thing. Yeah, I'm guilty. I care about people more than tax breaks and terrorism.

Notice how they never have an argument?

Your post is just tired sean that's all. What do you do all day while slinging coffee? Daydream about blowing up corporate offices? Abolishing property rights? Maybe giving all corporate profits to the homeless? What?

This is the way the world works... your post has NO POINT. It's a mindless laundry list of THING YOU DISLIKE.

Not really dude, its a laundry list of links to articles about housing. Again with the whole left-bashing thing hey? Wow, you really don't have an argument. Yeah, yeah, totally. Because I am concerned about the QUINTUPLING of homleless since Campbell came into office up to 2010, I am automatically anti-capitalist.

Thanks for totally proving my previous point, douche.

Sean, you hit the nail on it's head. Vancouver wants to sweep this issue under the table. I had seen the poster "Coule you live on $6 a day?". After I saw it I went and wrote a post about living on minumum wage after two of my friends moved here from New Brunswick. In three years the cost of living has tripled while the wages remain the same for the most part. I don't think samll-time mom and pop shops coule afford to pay their employees more but the large chains they sure as H*** could.

My boyfriend and I were so happy when woodwards was going to be built! We went and looked and then got the price tag for the suite. I had a good cry that night :). I feel like I was lead on by their advertising. I could go on...

Here the post I wrote I was referring to: http://jessicadoyle.ca/index.php/2006/09/20/friendly-considerations/

Yeah, Woodwards, although it is good that they are providing some social housing, seemed a little out of reach for the rest of us. Across the street, at the Dominion Hotel, they have a sort of artsy boutique hotel, but the other half is an SRO. So there are ways to do it, without gentrification.

Good article but I think you should give Visions Vancouver a little more credit. I have met all of their councilors and my aunt acutely ran last election; they really are people who care about Vancouver and everyone who lives in it.

And lets not give ?coffee slingers? a bad name

If bcneocon thinks that treating people with dignity regardless of their social status, income level or ability is tired then there is much work to be done. I for one am tired of living in a city where homeless people dig through my dumpster in search of half-eaten meals, while my peers cruise Robson Street accessorized with their - are those dogs? dressed up like dolls in designer outfits. It makes me sick that more and more, this city feeds on greed and excess. And those who can't or won't fit the mold are marginalized and penalized. This isn't the way the world should work.

Dont forget the "quick Fix" theyre proposing.... 100 square foot rooms with no bathrooms...shared bathrooms on each floor.. no kitchen... The UN has put a minimum sq footage on housing and its over 350... worldwide, it is illigal to house monkeys in zoos and otherwise in less than 150....

Yes, I'm a left basher. You guys are losers and you (ie. the NDP) bankrupted this province. But now, thanks to awesome Gord and the capitalist work ethic, we are about to announce tons of homeless solutions because that's just the way we are - we solve problems, we don't type up useless complaints that no one reads (except me sometimes, but anyway). You're weclome Sean.

P.S. I am a landlord as well as a neocon and these are the things I've done for my tenants out of my own pocket in the last 18 months:

-new laminate floor
-new kitchen/bath lino
-new carpet in the 2 bdrms
-new dishwasher
-new air conditioner (10,000 BTUs brrrrr)
-new bathroom vanity/mirror
-plumbing repairs
-2 coats of paint walls and ceiling
-new blinds living room, 1 bedroom
-all new shelving closets, storage room
-new laundry room bifold door
-all new 4-inch baseboards
-miscellany including drawer hardware, door stops, light fixtures, smoke alarm, door handles, towel rack, etc.

I get to write off a bit against my income but it comes nowhere near paying for my costs. What tangible thing have you done to make your fellow man's life better?

Wow, Harinder you seem to be mistaken and sum1 else does 2 about ur thoughts on housing. Everyone needs a house to live in and renting is not cheap either. 1 bedroom suite with bare necessities can ding u for a minimum of $600. now making 6$ hours working full time will earn u about 900$. And spending 600 of that just for housing is outrageous, especially for a single parent who needs to feed their kids. This causes families who can hardly scrape by and will soon end up homeless with an ever increasing housing market in Vancouver.
