It's About Time Someone Cashed In

061124_water.jpgI pretty much like taking advantage of any way I can be thoughtful without actually having to do anything. Like today being Buy Nothing Day. Doing nothing is a political statement? Sweet! Finally I can justify not wanting to stand up and move. I can sit on my couch and grumble about how bad consumerism is and I'm given every right to say I'm actually doing something progressive.

So in the spirit of all talk and no walk, here's my latest stroke of genius. The thousands of Vancouverites who've been drinking bottled water all week have likely produced a pretty hefty collection of empties. Some charity around here needs to pull itself together and spearhead a bottle drive.

This BC-style drought within a downpour has gotta pay off for someone. I know I've got a counter-full of empty water bottles in my kitchen. (Same old story, I'm too lazy to take them out to the recycling bin.) But I bet considering the fights for water in this city over the past week, there must be an impressive amount of money to be made on empties - way more charitable bling than any collection of soft drink can pull-tabs could rake in.

So do it somebody. I would but I'm too busy furrowing my brow and mumbling to myself.

That's an awesome idea! At work the empties pile up like nobody's business and if you leave them in the recycling bin the company that manages the building takes them and cashes. They certainly don't need the money so I always take the bag of empties and walk up the block. I either give them to a panhandler or leave them by a garbage bin so a collector can take it. Better him/her than a for-profit company.

If you do hear of a bottle drive that doesn't require my lazy ass to haul the bottles very far, please post about it. Cause I have a boat-load too.

Good idea. I don't have many empties lying around though. At my work the company cashes in all the bottles, but donates the proceeds to charity.
