Winter Guerilla Gardening?

20061121cabbage.jpgHas anyone else noticed these renegade kales around town? Or more specifically around East Van? I don't even know if they're kale, but they sure do look edible. I see them in the strangest places: popping up next to those trees planted in the sidewalk on Main Street, outside of parking lots in the industrial/factory district between Broadway and SE False Creek. And I keep wondering who planted them? Was it on purpose? Are they just weeds? Are they in fact edible? Will anyone harvest them? I can't imagine sauntering out to Main Street, clipping some greens (so close to endless streams of traffic) and eating them steamed with a bit of Tamari. But maybe I'm totally wrong, maybe they're just weeds that have always been there. Anyone willing to munch on some to find out?

That's actually called Flowering Kale or Ornamental Cabbage, and I don't think it's edible. It's used in winter flowerbeds around here because it stays purple late into the fall and even into the winter because the weather's so mild here.

Nope, not edible. I can't comment on whether these kale are an act of guerilla gardening (http://vancouverpublicspace.ca/index.php/campaigns/greening) since I haven't personally seen any, but there's a lot more of that happening in Vancouver these days. Yay!
