East Van Takes on Climate Change
I was in southwestern Ontario for the last couple of weeks and everyone was talking about the bizarre weather. There was no snow anywhere, no ice whatsoever on the lake, and only two days of sun. Very strange for late December. And more than a bit unsettling. Yesterday's headline in Toronto's Metro was "Toronto is the New Vancouver". I was on my way to take some photos of a pile of garbage so I didn't stop to read it, but I'm taking a wild guess that they were referring to the freakishly warm weather.
Indeed, climate change is a hot topic here in Vancouver too. What with the torrential rains, snowstorm, windstorms, and all. Today I found a letter in my mailbox from Libby Davies, one of my favourite members of parliament, with the headline "What can East Van do about CLIMATE CHANGE?" Well, curious residents can find out about the NDP's Green Agenda at the 100-Mile Breakfast (a breakfast made from produce from within a 100-mile circle around the community) on Thursday, January 11th from 7:30am to 9:00am at Pondok Indonesian Restaurant at 2781 Commercial Drive.
The breakfast will be hosted by East Van NDP MP Libby Davies and NDP leader Jack Layton, and will also feature Nathan Cullen (NDP environmental spokesperson), Ione Smith (of SmartGrowth BC), and Susan Kurbis (Environmental Youth Alliance). For more info, call Libby's office at 604-775-5800.
