Heron Hangout

bird_street.JPGI was out on Sunday for a walk through English Bay, prepping myself for the coming week and all the nasty little surprises that Monday seems to be so good at. It was a lucky thing I turned down Lagoon Drive just off Beach Ave to see who was playing tennis, otherwise I might have missed the nature special that was going on.

Now I wasn't a biology major at school and I'm not even close to being an expert bird watcher, but something about the 30 or so Heron nests dangling above Lagoon Drive told me that spring must be in the air.

We all know how bad of a beating Stanley Park took back in December during the windstorm. But, if you want to be poetic about it, seeing so many Herons (which seen flying are lucky, or so I've been told) in one place setting up shop for their eggs is as close to 'renewal' as I can tell.

I don't know much about Herons, so I don't know how long they'll all be in one place like this. But it is neat to see. It's like it's out of Jurassic Park or something. But if they're Vancouver Herons, then they're just playing the real-estate game like everyone else. I guess that means they'll eventually be renovating and jacking up the rates. Doesn't that make them birds of prey?
