Events: What's the Disposish this Weekend? If You're Sick and Tired of Fireworks.

Fri, July 27, 2007. Carnival Nocturnus 2007 @ The PNE. 12:00PM-12:00AM Sat. There wa$ no mention of ticket$.

This a festival for DEATHROCK, BATCAVE, POST-PUNK, PSYCHOBILLY, ROCKABILLY, GOTHABILLY and anything else involved with the underground horror scene's. It's a special day to celebrate their hidden culture, make friends and have a good time with people who share you interests. It's also apropos with the Lantern festival and all coincides on the same weekend. Last but not least, it DOES NOT coincide with the fireworks.

Sat, July 28, 2007. Battle of the Bands with Aristata @ Tom Lee Music Hall (929 Granville St.), 6:00PM. Tix. $10/$15 Door.
Aristata (among a few other bands) is playing the battle of the bands this month as part of the "Summer Warfare" series of concerts sponsored by Redpipe.ca. Come out and support this concept. I recall seeing bands come up with the strangest stuff when thrown into this improv setting.

Sat, July 28, 2007. Scorch Factory Nights @ The Snap Gallery (190 W. 3rd), 6:00PM. Tix. 15$/$20 Door.

Factory Nights are occasional events hosted by Snap Contemporary Art and The School of Mix to provide an opportunity for emerging artists to have their work featured in an established gallery environment. The evenings usually begin at 6pm and run until 3am which allows people to see a range of work by young painters, photographers, sculptors, illustrators and conceptual artists as well as independent short filmmakers and live musical acts. (For more info: http://myspace.com/factorynights)

Sat, July 28, 2007. Terminal Four Live Show @ The Red Room (398 Richards Street), 8:00PM. Tix. $10
Noisy night of punky indie rock. There's not much on these guys out there, except for a short blurb on their myspace, with no bio information. So I present this, for those who know names better than others: Jes - vox, Rhys - hits things, Owen - bass, Gordon - guitar. Take 2 parts English, 1 part Japanese & 1 part Canadian & mix it together in an Irish pub and this is what you get.

Sat, July 28, 2007. Payola$ Live @ The Commodore Ballroom (868 Granville St.), 8:30PM. Tix. $35.
Vocalists Paul Hyde and Bob Rock formed The Payola$ with drummer Chris Taylor and bassist Larry Wilkins. The group was formed in Vancouver, British Columbia and recorded mostly at Vancouver's Little Mountain Sound. Although the band always seemed poised for a big international breakthrough, The Payola$ never quite broke out despite their artistic growth and popular success.

Sun, July 29, 2007. The Fray, Live @ Deer Lake Park (6450 Deer Lake Ave), 8:00PM. Tix.$40
The Fray started out with regular two-man jam sessions that led to writing songs and devising a style pitched between the arena-friendly style of U2 and the authentic rock of bands like Counting Crows. This all led to them being signed by Epic Records in 2004. Their debut album, How to Save a Life, was released in September of 2005. I hear Vancouver has quite a few fans. So here ya go. This nite is presented by The Beat 94.5 FM.

**P2P Outdoor Art Videos: Friday, July 27th, 10pm at Open Studios (252 East 1st Avenue, Vancouver, around back.)

Join us in Vancouver for an outdoor screening of local and international art videos,

Appropriating the functional model of online videosharing sites such as Youtube, we are creating a series of exploratory events that translate social videosharing into the analogue environment of the urban street.

Video programmes are curated by individual Upgrade nodes and screened outdoors in the built environment of cities including Vancouver, Paris, Montreal, Belgrade, Seattle, Scotland, Skopje, Chicago, Amsterdam and Istanbul. Videos travel between cities, being screened locally and internationally.

The social software aspect of these events is explored through a deliberately low-tech model in which flyers containing contact information for participating artists will be circulated at the screenings, with the intention of encouraging people in these cities to develop individual connections.

On July 27th, along with the Vancouver reel we will show the one from Upgrade! Scotland, produced in connection with New Media Scotland. http://www.mediascot.org/upgrade/

The screening will be at Open Studios (252 East 1st Avenue, Vancouver, just east of Main. Go around back.) Starts at 10pm.
