Announcing "Queeruption 10: Vancouver, Canada!", August 1-7 2007. Let's talk about controversy! People getting down and dirty about controversy is my idea of a fun couple days. Almost like a philosopher's Cafe only better! Cuz, come on, what's hotter than a good convo anyways? A bunch of workshops are held around varying venues in Vancouver, which are usually announced just a few days in advance, but the bulk of the gigz taking place at Sunshine Coast (get directions). Why should Vancouverites know about this then? Well, I tell ya, perhaps because most people going to this thing are from urban centres like Vancouver, and prolly because most people there are Vancouverites, or at least are expected to be!
So, you ask: What is Queer? Well, in short, it means different, not only sexually, but also socially. The word queer, according to wikipedia, has traditionally meant "strange" or "unusual," but now is also often used in reference to gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and asexual people. Its usage is controversial and underwent substantial changes over the course of the 20th century. In my opinion, what better reason to get together than controversial things like this. This is a wonderful place and time for hyphenated individuals to get together and network.
Structured casually and de-centrally, it is a place for anyone "queer" to get together with other "other-ed" people. Queeruption is a participatory event. This means that the gathering requires the active input of everyone attending in order for it to be meaningful. There is no difference between the people organizing and those attending from different cities or municipalities. We all work together and contribute what we can to make the event a success. Come with your passion, ideas and skills and prepare to learn, share, question and create the alternatives you want to see in the world.
This summer Queeruption is heading north to Canada, (eh). Come prepared with sleeping bags, tents, bug repellent, queer campfire stories and vegan hotdogs because Queeruption 10, will happen in the Canadian outdoors, just outside of the main City! The Queeruption Vancouver organizing collective is extending Q10 by a few days from what i hear (or at least more than one). Q10 will now run for a full week, from August 1st to August 7th.
Come engage in actions, workshops, discussions, and performances. The Vancouver area provides a unique political and ecological setting for queers of all sexualities and genders to gather, discuss, and create ideas to challenge the world's systems of oppression and injustice.
Queeruption are looking for people who want to contribute to performances, workshops, filmscreenings, building composting toilets, fucking shit up, etc. email the Queeruption Vancouver collective at q10vancouver@queeruption.org if you have ideas or skills you want to share.
As well, although Queeruption is a D.I.Y. event and we want to keep costs down to the greatest possible extent, it obviously costs some money to put Queeruption together. We'll need money for food, transporting people, and whatever supplies we can't make/barter/steal. We'll be raising money like hell, but if any of you queers out there in other cities want to put on a fundraiser, it would be a GREAT help.

Like nails on a chalkboard, when Americans do that.
