Our Problems Can Always Be Worse
The weather forecast early yesterday evening predicted it would reach bellow 0 degrees overnight. I'm not sure if it did but it was cold.
I was driving along Cordova Street with a friend when I noticed a huge line-up on the right side of the street as I approached Main. My naive first instinct was: "wow, something is happening tonight!". Then I looked closer and realized it was a line-up for The Salvation Army Harbour Light shelter. The line-up continued at least half a block down the street. I looked at the front entrance and saw a big 'full' sign on the door. These people have no choice but to endure the cold tonight.
I can't even begin a rant because we all have heard it before. And yes, of course I can be criticized as not 'doing anything but instead talking about it'. I've resided in Vancouver for 10 years and I'm finally realizing that we have a serious lack of homeless shelters. And now I'm going to throw in my opinion about 2010...here is my rhetoric: how can the city be spending all this money on extravagant infrastructure when 100's of people are freezing at night because they don't have a simple housing structure?

Marnie,
You've touched upon a really important issue. And it's great that you actually say "... of course I can be criticized as not doing anything but instead talknig about it". Next step, I guess, would be to blog more extensively about it, in more detail, with some proposals as to how to deal with it. I am sure you could do a lot of good raising awareness. With a voice on Beyond Robson (one of the best Vancouver blogs), I would argue that you are well positioned to DO something about it. Good job.
