I have never been to a fashion show in my life and it is unlikely that I will attend this one, however it does strike me as a fun opportunity to dress up and check out the pretty people in the name of charity.
At Ginger 62 tomorrow night (Nov.29th), a club that prefers pretty preeners, Mara Gottler is showcasing her first two fashion collections, "Holiday 2005" and "Spring/Summer 2006". According to her bio she metamorphosed into fashion designer by way of costume designer, so expect some theatrical embellishments in her designs. All the proceeds from this show will go to the BC Children's Hospital and Camp Moomba, "a summer camp for children living with HIV/AIDS". I am not sure why these particular charities were chosen, or why fashion shows and AIDS benefits often go hand in hand. However, let us not dwell on these questions, but return to the more pressing matter of clothes.
I checked out Mara Gottler's website and took a quick gander at her collections. She is definitely fond of the corset, which, given her theater history, seems appropriately dramatic. And an excerpt from Susie Walls fashion column in the Province makes note of Gottler's particular version of this waist cinching accessory, which she then goes on to suggest pairing with "jeans and a fitted white cotton T or an off-duty supermodel statement or a crisp, collared blouse for a meet-me-in-Manhatten vibe". I wouldn't mind looking like an off-duty supermodel, never mind that I am barely five foot four and my left arm probably weighs more than one of those gazelles, however the whole corset thing doesn't strike me as compatible with my gut, which prefers the freedom of low waistlines and boxy tees. Continuing to look through the collections it occurred to me that most of the clothing caters to the conservative, but classy, middle aged woman. Although I could be off on that one. I'll let you decide.
So there you go people, a fashion event that you will probably not go to, but it's nice to know you have the option, right?
