051030_amnesty.jpgStarting this Thursday is the Amnesty International Film Festival bringing stories from all over to the Pacific Cinematheque.

There are other films about aid, how the international economy affects the lower rungs of the ladder, the procedural differences of a developing country vs. a developed one, and two films about the transport of refugees.

Since this film festival is put on by Amnesty International I'm sure I am not the only one to have the misconception that all these films would be about developing countries (or the effects of having developed countries aiding or doing business with developing countries). Not so. We have our own problems. One of the films shown this year is Two Worlds Colliding. It's about the once habitual "Freezing Deaths" in Saskatoon. It's double-billed with Justice for our Daughters, a short about the disappearances of many young girls in Mexico and how the government auspices it all.

The Amnesty International Film Fest runs from October 3 - 6 at the Pacific Cinematheque (1131 Howe Street)

An Australian, Van Tuong Nguyen, will be executed for drug trafficking unless more attention is drawn to his plight. I believe that together we may save the life of this man.

To this end, I have written an open letter to the President of the Republic of Singapore asking for clemency. The open letter, which includes a dozen related e-mail addresses, is online:

Letter to Singapore's President

It is my hope that the interactivity of the Web can save a young man's life. Please read the above site and if you agree that a human should not die for being caught with drugs, then I beg you to send an e-mail asking the President of Singapore for clemency on behalf of Van.

Sincerely,

Dave Jarvis
