Women in Film and Video - Martini Madness

I'm going to a party tonight. It's the Women In Film and Video Martini Madness party at Celebrities.

Now, unless we're counting the two truly craptastic short films I did with my film student ex boyfriend back in 1998, I am not technically a woman in film and/or video. I know a few women in film and/or video - the photo at the top of my post is me at my high school graduation with my friend and former classmate and filmmaker Deepa Mehta - but these are connections I made by accident.

I was invited to the Martini Madness party because they (meaning organizers) want press about it. That's cool with me. Sometimes these kind of parties are real job perks. Then again, sometimes they're not.

I have no idea what to expect from tonight. The party apparently attracts over 1000 attendees and is a major "Hollywood North" schmooze-fest. Alas, I'm not a very good schmoozer.

So, will it be fun? Will I meet people and chat and enjoy myself or end up standing in the wings with my little notebook? Not long ago I posted about seeing celebrities in the city and about how I always wonder if accosting them is a good idea. Most of you BR readers said no. You said I should leave them alone. So what about at an event like this? Should I attempt to hobnob with the glitterati or just observe them from the shadows? What would you do? What would you rather read about?

Festivities kick off at 7 p.m. Weigh in before then and I'll do my best to take your advice.

I'm not sure I agree with the people who say that you should never bother a celebrity in town. Nobody who chooses to be a star loathes attention. Of course, there is likely such a thing as too much attention, or the bad kind of attention, but I could tolerate the horror of people telling me "I love your work". And I figure they can too.

But in a situation like this? They're hobnobbing, or at least have to be expecting others to. So long as you're not thrusting your movie script into their hands in the hopes of getting it made, you're all good to talk to them - especially here, I say.
