If you ride Skytrain into downtown, between Main Street and Stadium station, you pass a huge, empty parking lot. Between Science World and GM Place, I look down and often see youngins on BMX bikes, popping wheelies and doing turns as graceful as a skater.
I once bought a bike to learn tricks, but never started. At my ripe old age (kidding), that dream seems a bit more distant, with my often-sore back and fear of sweating. But I still have the bike, and I get excited watching BMX DVDs.
I am quite excited that some "bicycle porn" will be coming to a big screen near me on June 28...
Bike Shorts is Vancouver's yearly celebration of international cycling cinema. This year, it's being held at the Van East Theatre, on Commercial Drive. How convenient, close to residential cycle paths and Skytrain. For a measly $10, you get to watch fourteen short films, back to back.
On the local front, the East Van Bike Polo club has produced a short. Then there's "A Slip in Time", looking back at Vancouver's bicycle scene. Bike Shorts also features animation, such as "Off the Beaten Track" from England.
The film I'm looking forward to is "Tokyo's Flatland Riders". Nothing but turning tricks and crazy flips! "Bike Skirts" seems to be a call for cyclists to incorporate more style into their ride. Something I definitely agree with.
Hope to see you there! On a side note, don't be a chatter while I'm watching. Otherwise, a bash with my bike lock for you!
