Win Tickets to DAFT PUNK's "Electroma"
Daft Punk is coming to Vancouver! You may have seen the posters of our favourite chrome-domes around town. But before you shit your dance pants and quit your job so your schedule's free, let's be clear-- it's their movie that's coming, not their live show. This engagement is likely to be more art-house than sci-fi.
This weekend, as an exclusive engagement at the Vancity Theatre, Vice Records is presenting "Electroma", a silent film by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (Daft Punk) about two robots who journey across mythic American landscapes in a quest to become human.
The Vice Records site gives a bit more background on the French duo's debut as feature-length writers and directors: "With its breathtaking cinematography, innovative filming techniques, and above all its underlying search for humanity within a dystopian environment, Daft Punk have delivered a film that finds a common thread with their previous work while exploring new horizons as directors of their first feature film." By looking at the trailer, you might think it was a collabo between Gus Van Sant and Stanley Kubrick.
The film was actually an unplanned extension of their videos "Robot Rock" and "Technologic", also directed by Bangaltar and de Homem-Christo. "With this film, we had the same approach as when we started making music. Create without any rules or standards. Take a free approach to something new that you don't really know, and that you learn from scratch," says Bangaltar about the film's conception.
Not all Daft Punk fans will immediately appreciate Electroma (as with most experimental cinema) but there seems to be a large audience that gets it. The film does not feature any of Daft Punk's music, and instead opts for more suitably subdued compositions from Todd Rundgren, Brian Eno, Sebastien Tellier, Curtis Mayfield, Linda Perhacs, Jackson C. Frank and Mathieu Tonetti.
Beyond Robson is giving away a pair of passes for each screening of Electroma. To win, just post a comment and include the name of your favorite Daft Punk video. Contest ends at 5pm Thursday, after which we will randomly select the winners. Good luck!
