Although the weather calls for a particularly sunny and warm weekend (but really, who knows right?) the Projecting Change Film Festival which runs from April 2 - 5 at the Fifth Avenue Cinemas might be a good reason to stay inside for some of it.
The festival is more than just a clever name, with 18 films that focus on the themes of sustainability, green living, and the environment. From the looks of the website there are films on subjects that range from the corporatization of our food system to the fishing crisis to Toronto's bike share program (perhaps one day we too will have such a thing).
Each film is paired with a speaker that relates in some way to the topic addressed in the film. David Suzuki, obviously, is speaking. It wouldn't be an environmental hoedown without him. Apparently, all profits are reinvested into local initiatives, which are perhaps some of the organizations listed under their "people we support".
One of the films being shown is Blue Gold, which I happened to catch at last years VIFF (where it won the audience choice award for best environmental film) and thought it was a great film on global water issues. The film is based on a book written by Maude Barlow, a Canadian water activist, who is the the chairperson for the Council of Canadians as well as the recently appointed Senior Advisor on Water Issues for the United Nations.
