Photo Feature 23 January 2007

Hello again everybody! It’s a bee-yooo-tiful day for photo featuring!

Thanks again for tuning into your semi-weekly photo feature where we highlight some of the beautiful images found in the Beyond Robson Flickr Group. Want to see your name up in lights on the front page? That probably won’t happen, but if you submit your photos to the Flickr group you automatically have a chance at having them featured on the front page.

Here are today’s selections. I chose them because they are great; that is the only criteria.

Photo Feature

  1. Untitled by M-J Milloy (top left)
  2. Untitled by langdon_alger (top right)
  3. Vancouver theater by jeferichardson (bottom left)
  4. Untitled by .rW (bottom right)

First up there’s a brilliant shot looking up at the Dominion Building by M-J Milloy, then langdon_alger treats us to a wonderful image of a child in the park (and the ducks that amuse us all). We then take a look at the iconic Stanley Theatre sign as captured by jeferichardson, and lastly my favourite shot of my favourite downed tree on the seawall by .rW.

As always I’ve sent a note to each of the photographers inviting them to participate and share with us their thoughts. I, for one, welcome our photographic overlords.

Lastly, one of the bonus points from last time went unclaimed; I guess there are no Harvey Birdman fans reading Beyond Robson (ha ha! funny pictures). Lucky for you all though that there are two more points to be claimed today.

Thankyouverrymuch for the pick, matt -- it's more evidence that it's hard to predict a picture's impact when you take it, and the impact is often not proportional to how much you worked on it. I took this on what seemed like the only sunny day for months a couple of weeks ago on a photowander through the DTES. Had to step into Hastings to get a good view of the bldg w/out bus and phone wires. A little post-processing (cropping and sharpening, mostly.) That's it.

Thanks again for the pick.

Oh, forgot to say the other picks are really good -- esp. the Stanley Theatre shot, 'tho I'm a sucker for those dusk/neon urban shots.

Anyone can point a camera upwards at a building, M-J. This photograph is boring. The only impact it has on me is anger at the fact that you get credit where it is clearly not due.

I'm glad you like my photo Matt, and thanks for putting it up on the site :) I'm all about trying to find different compositions, and after seeing a good number of people take photos of themselves sitting on the tree, I figured I would give the poor thing some dignity and go all classic-symmetrical on it... the benches and the cement slab agreed with me, and the buildings and clouds in the background kept it interesting (and a bit of level/colour/perspective adjusting helped it along)

Jessica,

I hereby admit that my love for the Dominion Building may have influenced my choice of photo.

Then again, what people like is pretty subjective :\

It is a beautiful building. I think what bothered me has nothing to do with your choice, only M-J's ego. No one commented on his photograph, and yet he felt the need to go an a tirade about it's impact. On flicker the only one who commented on the photo was some flower power obsessed woman. He seems to have had no feedback and still thinks his photo wonderful.
