Pictures from the Pool: Main Street - Science World

It's been a while since we last featured picks from the plethora of superlative photos available in our Beyond Robson Flickr Pool. So let's go with a couple complementary pictures that have been taken in an area that used to be under water.

On the left is a exquisite shot titled "An Intro to Spring", taken by BR Flickr Pool member kennylouie. Being a huge fan of cityscape shots that balance the available luminance of the sky and city lights, I can safely say that kennylouie's nailed it in this wonderful example of perfect timing. Reflections, clouds, colours and shapes are all themes in this unique capture of Vancouver's world-famous skyline. Kenny uses a Canon 20D and has quite the collection of beautiful high dynamic range (HDR) photographs.

And over on the right side is a photograph deftly shot by bluechameleon named "silhouettes on main street". The black and white emphasizes the fantastic composition and framing of both the humans waiting in the station and the birds resting on the tree. Also note the excellent juxtaposition between the geometric lines of the girders and the haphazardly pointed tree branches. Keep in mind, she shot this and many others with a simple Canon A640, proving it's not what you have, but how you use it.

The talent I've seen in this pool seems absolutely limitless. Keep them coming people! Thanks again to all the members of the BR Flickr pool - we'll try our best to keep these photo posts going. In the meantime, if you haven't done so already, visit Ami's Flickr game!

Beyond Robson's Flickr 500

<a href="http://www.beyondrobson.com/flickr_forum/2008/05/beyond_robsons_flickr_500"

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Beyond Robson is privileged to have such an excellent Flickr pool. Every day the pool expands it's collection of local images that are artistic, humorous, inspiring and provoking. Sometime this week we'll be welcoming our 500th member to the group! This benchmark is a great opportunity to further develop the group into a secondary BR discussion place. By increasing ideas, questions, tips, networking, collaborations and games, we can make our group even more valuable. If you're into Flickr games, check out a game that I recently started up!

I'd like to thank all those who have contributed images to the pool. Our Flickr group welcomes all Vancouver-related images (and video) from artists of all skill levels (from amateurs to professionals). Pictures from the Flickr pool are often featured (with credit to the photographer) in Beyond Robson articles.

As a new contributor to Beyond Robson, I've been pleasantly surprised with the calibre of images that are constantly submitted to the Beyond Robson Flickr Pool. The pool serves as a reminder that this city has a wealth of talent, and I thought I'd show a little appreciation by showcasing a few shots that caught my eye.

Photo Feature 19 Nov 2007: Themeless

Good evening folks and welcome to your Monday Evening Photo Feature. I know it doesn't have the same ring as friday photo feature, but it'll have to do for now since I am gong to be doing this on Mondays for the foreseeable future.

Tonight I've taken some time to troll the depths of the Beyond Robson Flickr group and find some of the better photos for you to look at and applaud. If you'd like to see a photo of your own here on the front page of a blog read by lots and lots of people every day then you should take a few minutes to join and submit photos to the group. It's free and it's easy! Just like your mom. Ha ha! I keeed.

Anyway on to business. Today we don't have a theme.

Photo Feature 12 Nov 2007: Four Legged Friends

Good evening ladels and jellyspoons, and welcome to your weekly photo feature. Apologies for the tardiness; I have had some technical and personal difficulties getting posts to press lately. I was thinking I might change the "weekly" in the title to "occasional," but that doesn't have the same ring to it. Either way, I should be getting on top of it presently.

As usual, we've rooted through the Beyond Robson Flickr group to bring you the best and brightest that Vancouver has to offer. Any photos in the Flickr group are eligible for featuring, so if you'd like to use up part of your fifteen minutes start submitting to the group now! It's both free and easy!

Today's theme is our four legged friends.

Photo Feature 19 Oct 2007: Ocean Scenes

Hello? Hello? This thing on? Oh good. Greetings Vancouverites! I'm back and ready for action with a super-sized photo feature.

What's a photo feature you ask? Well, it has been a while. Basically, I spend time trolling through the Beyond Robson Flickr group looking for the best and brightest photos, and then I feature them here on the main Beyond Robson page.

Any photo in the group is eligible to be featured, and the group is free to join, so get submitting now if you want to see your name up in lights!

Today we're going with a theme, and it's ocean scenes.

First up is The Calm Before the Storm by esoteRIKphoto. I love everything about this photo, the glassy water on the beach, the arrangement of kayaks and the splash of colour they bring, and most of all the foreboding sky. Truly a brilliant photo.

Next on the list is female diver by petenator. I've always liked this statue, and Peter has taken the best photo of it I've seen in a long time. The one second exposure brings out the detail in the statue and makes the smooth water frame the photo nicely.

Thirdly, which is by no means an indication of rank, is Streaming by Victoria Potter. The fire boat, with water streaming ahead of it. It's a classic image and Victoria has captured it splendidly.

Lastly, again no indication of rank, is Silver Sunset with Ship on Horizon by Mark Klotz. This is a striking image. From the stark black and white contrast to the god rays at the top to the silhouetted ship and mountains on the horizon. Lots of detail and lots of absorb. Stunning, truly stunning.

That's it for this edition of the photo feature. I'll be letting each of the photographers know that they've been featured, but in the mean time lets congratulate them on their fine work!

Look for regular photo features to return next week!

Photo Feature 22 Sept 2007: Strike

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to this special weekend edition of your Photo Feature. Apologies for the tardiness, but to make up for missing both yesterday and Tuesday today we're going to double up and feature four photos.

Getting featured here is pretty easy really, all you have to do is submit your work to the Beyond Robson Flickr group and then wait. If your photo speaks to me then I'll feature it. Or if Sean thinks it fits with his daily Morning Brew posts, he'll feature it there. Or if someone needs a photo for an article, they might feature it there (all with attribution, of course).

Today's theme is everyone's favourite current event, the strike.

Photo Feature 14 Sept 2007: People

Good morning ladies and germs! Welcome back to another instalment of your Friday Photo Feature, the only regular column on Beyond Robson with alliteration in the title.

Today we are, as always, shining the shiny spotlight of fame and glory at some of the best and brightest photographers (and their photos) in Vancouver. Or at least, the best and brightest who also happen to submit photos to the Beyond Robson Flickr group! Anyone can do it, it's free! So if you want to see your name up in lights, start submitting!

Today's theme is "people."

On the left today is Clasp by Waxy, another great street shot from a master of the form. The look on these two women's faces are priceless, simply priceless, and the flash work is great too.

On the right is Granville Escalator by nofutureface, a nice candid shot from inside Granville Skytrain station. I certainly hope that security didn't take offence.

I think I need to feature people/street shots more often.

As usual I'll be letting the photographers know that they've been featured, but let's give them all a bug round of virtual applause in the mean time. Woo!

Photo Feature 11 Sept 2007: Wall Centre

Good morning dear readers and welcome once more to the Tuesday Photo Feature, the regular column where we take the time to point out fantastic photos by fantastic photographers in our fair city.

Or at least the ones who post their photos to the Beyond Robson Flickr Group. If you want to see your photos up in lights then start submitting to the group, it's free and it's a good first step down that path to worldwide fame and glory.

Today's theme, in keeping with the date, is "really tall and prominent building," aka The Wall Centre.
