Two Other Ones Bite the Dust

Hey party people in the house! What's up? Have you decided you've raised the roof one too many times? Did you retire from the decks? Sprained your ankle for the last time while pogoing uncontrollably? Have you decided Top 40 is the wave of the future?

It's got to be something because the two most important pillars of the local electronic music community are deteriorating.

Last week Active Pass announced that on November 11 it is closing its doors FOREVER. That's the second record store to shut down in the past two months.

And then there's Sonar. Recently, the owners of Sonar announced that after eight years they have sold the club. The new owners are going to overhaul its image and supposedly turn it into a club that attracts more of the Granville Street crowd.

Tonight is the last party Sonar, as we know it, will put on. Something Wicked This Way Comes 6 is a Halloween party that the Sanctuary promoters put on. In the main room there will be electro, retro, EBM, industrial and alternative with DJs Pandemonium, Pyxis & Contrasoma. In the upstairs room DJs Causai, Chris Schmidt and Angel will be playing psy hard trance and goa.

The staff, past and present, will be in attendance and it should be a very sentimental event so don't go assuming the drops falling on you are necessarily condensation, they could very well be tears.

FYI, all records at Active Pass are $5 a pop

it does suck about Sonar- but I wouldn't necessarily argue that they were promoting too much that is different than say, the Plaza. Their regualr nights were pretty standard (Sundays excepted)- all I'll worry about is the actual shows- and hopefully the new owners will see that we're already at a serious deficit for venues.... As for Active Pass, that totally sucks :(

Maybe if the bouncers weren't they way the were from the last two years on, they wouldn't be facing this. I, myself have never had a problem, however, I think everyone knows exactly what I'm talking about.

I know what you're talking about Todd! The past few times I had been to Sonar I had witnessed, and had friends experince condescening, and innapropriate behavior from the doormen. You can't expect the best or if any type of customer service from night clubs, but I truley believed that the bouncers alone deterred many customers from comming back. Although the shut down does suck, new management might be a good thing for that venue...if anything it might encourage promoters to invest into a fresh new scene. Sonar has been consistent with its alternative choice in music, and has always attracted music lovers. Im sure the new venue will withhold that reputation.....of course without those asshole bouncers.
