July Fourth Toilet Gives Back

So you decided to venture down to Pats Pub one evening. And there they were, pushing the boundaries of music, July Fourth Toilet. It was hard to know what to make of the spectacle. Robert Dayton's child molester mustache and polyester pants were uncomfortably alluring, you stayed. You ordered a beer, and then another. Long after JFT had accosted you with with their brand of experimental collaboration, you sat shell shocked unsure of what you had just witnessed. The sensation wasn't entirely unpleasant. Perhaps you enjoyed it. You might have even looked into acquiring a c.d.. But the next morning, or the next week, or even the next month, the subversive nature of what you had witnessed was still lingering, like a halitosis, which no amount of toothpaste could exorcise. And when you tried to describe that ugly feeling you found yourself staring into space, unable to capture the words. Your friends searched your face as though you were suddenly a stranger. It's possible you managed to get over it, or maybe you didn't, but there was always the awful loneliness of suffering alone. Well, no longer.
Tomorrow night (Friday, Nov. 25) at the Lamplighter is a benefit for the victims of JFT. This is a very serious benefit and you can expect everything that befits such a gathering: "Operators will be on hand to take pledges, bake sale, 50/50 draw, a poster child, heart wrenching speeches, a musical medley, "pass the hat" and other pathetic ways of generating commerce will all sparkle in this pro-participant spectacular".
The highlight of the benefit will no doubt be the band, the Penguins, who if they don't make you feel better, will make you wonder what you were up to when you were twelve years old. Sean Conner from the Courier gives us a glimpse of what to expect from this classic rock loving band:
"The Penguins is a Vancouver band that incorporates Led Zeppelin songs into its set. The average age of its members: 12. Currently, says drummer Nigel Boeur, the group is learning 'Stairway to Heaven.'
'[Classic rock] was always played in my house, and I kind of grew up with it, I guess. I just turned on to it a lot when I was 11,' says the 12-year-old. Does he know the history, and the stories of the bands? 'I think I can remember the band members of Led Zeppelin,' he says.'
Boeur unhesitatingly names Neil Peart, the drummer for Canadian classic rock icons Rush, as his musical hero. 'He's one of my favorite drummers ever.' The young musician also mentions Ginger Baker from Cream and Led Zep's John Bonham."
