Woe upon woes. The gig is cancelled, because the venue itself rudely had an impromptu closure. This is extra sad, considering that the gig was pretty much sold out. The latest news is that Mesa Luna shut down and they've taken Islands' damage deposit with them. Fuckers. We'll hunt your salsa-shaking asses down and get the money back!
Read about Islands anyways, after the jump.
With a band name like Islands, you might think that ex-Unicorns frontmen Nick Diamonds and J'aime Tambeur might be becoming more and more introspective/socially recluse with their song-writing. But no, the boys have been busy reeling in more and more musiciany types to contribute on their new album, Return to the Sea. Islands have left behind the Unicorns' altered synths in favour of a more organic collection of instruments. And more of an... island type of feel. You know: country, calypso, hip-hop influences are pretty much inevitable when you toss a lap steel, strings, clarinet, etc into the mix. Ok, not having actually heard Islands before, all I know is that anyone who is pining to hear more Unicorns-esque eclectic, cute-yet-foreboding quintessential electro-tinged pop will be denied. Does anyone else find all this multi-genre talk boring as all hell? Well that may be so, but the tunes themselves are guaranteed not to be. Swing by Mesa Luna on Tuesday to see the gang do a signature entertaining performance. They wowed crowds in NY, and they just might do so here too. (Diamonds is a BC boy, so you might wanna give props to (ex-)local talent.
Still not convinced? Then don't take my word for it: Check out what the music snobs at Pitchfork have to say about Islands.
The gig is all ages. But the alkies don't need to fret: I'm pretty sure you can score drinks upstairs.
