Jess Hill at the Anza

051706_jesshill.jpgHere's another gig on Thursday, if punkrock ain't your style. Vancouverite Jess Hill is having a cd release party and it sounds like it might be the kind of show that makes you melt into a puddle of tears on the would-be dance floor. She's got a beautiful folksy voice which can be heard on her Myspace site: oh it's a tear-jerker! But she may likely be more than meets the ear (from that one track, anyhow). Citing influences like Tom Waits, Wilco and NIck Drake, she's likely to have some eclectic twists and turns in her musical repertoire.

Opening for her is Tarran the Tailor, who does bluesy, dubby, experimental soundscapes. The stuff I've heard sounds pretty cool, like the kind of stuff you might need coming down from a night of overwhelming hallucinogens. That could be great, or not so great depending on your state of mind. It's not the party, it's the sullen aftermath that's being explored.

So if you're looking to chill out tomorrow, wishing you had reasons to feel melancholy, swing by the Anza and support some local talent while you're at it.
