Uberzone'd the other Night, Quest on Wednesday
American breakbeat DJ/producer, Uberzone played to an impressive crowd Saturday night at Cyber Nightclub in the face of stiff competition from next door neighbour, Plush, and many other venus hosting their own unofficial fireworks afterparties.
Cyber is fast becoming a reliable spot to catch big ticket breaks DJs, thanks to the work of Ruff House and Sasquatch Drummer, Silverwaters and Kitz Entertainment. Since mid-April, Wednesday nights have seen the Break House event kick down the hump day beats courtesy of a formidable line-up of residents which includes Soma, Ryan Ross, Deliverance, Skip Ez, Hirshee and Rubix.
Hot on the heels of the Uberzone show will be another post-Celebration of Lights party, featuring heavy breaks pioneer, DJ Quest and a slew of extra talent. Additional DJs along for the ride are: DJ Leethal (Toronto) with MC Syndikit (Montreal); Filthy Fingers; Ryan Ross; Lenny Ford; Skip Ez; hosting duties by Myster.E MC.
Cyber Nightclub works well enough for these kind of shows. A friend of mine cynically refers to these cozy venues as "night boxes". No, it's not fancy like a multi-level dance cathedral that you'd find with say, Skybar. You have a place to dance, a bar and some seats to crash out on, a couple projection screens and that's about it, folks. Fortunately the no-frills aesthetics are offset by a pretty good sound system that's loud without the muddying distortion that strips the nuances out of all the banging tracks being played.
I would love to see the breaks DJs get some play at the larger venues in the near future, but for now, they seem to be taking care of the beats pretty well at Cyber.
