Emily Haines sheds the live-wire succexiness of Metric and brings it down low, close and intimate for her solo show. She performs with her band the Soft Skeleton at the Commodore Ballroom on Thursday, January 18th, and Beyond Robson has a pair of tickets to give away.

To win the tickets, simply post a comment below telling us what your favourite live music venue in the city is and why. We will randomly select the winner and notification will be sent by email. Good luck!

The Commodore, because of the (once bouncy) ballroom floor.

Richards on Richards, for it's multiple viewing lines, great sound, and intimacy (oh, and awesome bands)

The Commodore, because no matter what style of music you're going to see there, you still feel classy just being in the room.

The Media Club because it's the best tiny intimate venue in the city. You're so close to the band that you're in danger of being hit by a mic stand or guitar or something.

Richard's. Because it's multi leveled, it's dark, and it's not on Granville. And because it's sbout to be extinct.

Richard's, I'm mostly echoing what patty said: It has two levels with good viewing angles [it's kind of circular, instead of opera house-esque]. dark means afternoon shows can still be awesome. not on Granville means there are less pricks.

Commodore is too big, Media Club is too small, and the Plaza has a bar in the middle.

what's this about Richard's going extinct?

pat's pub for the big bottles of beer and the excitement of maybe brushing shoulders with the regulars

UBC sub room. The actual theatre room itself sets up a great stage for artists to perform.

The Media Club. It's one of the best intimate music environments in Van and, since I'm tall, the low stage doesn't bother me. Poor short people...

i'm going to have to go with the now sadly defunct marine club. mainly because of how ghetto it is. in the summer it was always so hot but the guys at the bar always set up this retro plastic water cooler so you didn't have to keep going to to ask for another jug of water. also because of the odd view of that porch behind the stage and just the awkwardness of the whole place.

marine club, i salute you.

Any venue is good if it's an act you care about.

The Commodore is probably my favourite because you can get upfront and personal with fairly big touring acts. Many fond memories of gigs there.

Oh, and boo to the closing of the Marine Club, and please let the rumour about Richard's be false.

commodore, because it's larger, sound is decent and it's got loads of seating.

Commodore, followed a close second by Richards On Richards. Commodore is swanky and great sound, not to mention large enough for big acts without losing intimacy. Richard's just has that rock show vibe running throughout; cramped, loud, and tiny. All good stuff.

Richards. Mostly for the many reasons stated, good site lines, big enough dance floor, kind of surreal to think what it might be like when there isn't a band playing.

Also, one of my favorite shows ever was the Wailers there years ago.

the Commodore, because I have extreme OCD issues that have turned my absolutely paranoid in every not-so-clean venue I've been in, and the Commodore just happens to be a tad cleaner than the competition

Media Club

just a very intimate setting, you're so close to the artist without being pushed every which way.

Posted by: camille at January 13, 2007 12:38 AM | Quote Comment

The Commodore, because it has the best sound.

The Commodore, nice place with lots of room.

Richard's on Richards, because I don't know what I'll do when my default spot, front row just left of the middle of the stage, is gone.

woot woot!

...figured i'd try.

That's a good idea, I have left messages with a few people but haven't heard a positive response. Maybe a shoutout to myspace pals... ("my myspace" always sounds awkward, doesn't it?)
