Subtle, LIVE @ Richard's on Richards

Adam "Doseone" Drucker is one of the most charismatic hip hop frontmen I've ever seen perform. His machine-gun rhymes and bizarre theatrics were the highlight of Subtle's live performance at the Media Club about a year ago. He pulled props--like a plastic fork--from a striped skull to which he'd rap and ponder for a moment, much like a hip hop Hamlet. Then go on to tell a funny story about him and his girlfriend walking down the street in Vancouver.

Subtle's sound is anything but subtle. Filled out by a 5-piece band that includes drums, saxophones and an electric cello, the music is dense and demands attention. They move from erudite hip hop to avant-rock to more ambient beats, allowing the focus to shift to Doseone's stream-of-conscious lyrics.

Subtle showcases their unique brand of art-hop tonight at Richard's.
