Elvis Perkins in Dearland Swoons Their Way to the Media Club

20070327_elvisperkins.jpgSeems like we're getting an overflow of hot new indie "it" thangs fresh from the SXSW pipeline. Elvis Perkins is no exception. Along with his touring outfit, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, he brings his swoon-worthy folk offerings to The Media Club this Saturday, March 31.

Now, if you think this bespectacled lad looks a little like Norman Bates, well... you're on to something. That's right, he's the son of deceased actor Anthony Perkins, but he's successfully garnered his own fan base through artistic talents far, far removed from Psycho. With a new debut LP, Ash Wednesday (XL Recordings), and tour dates alongside indie hotties Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and My Morning Jacket under his live music belt, Elvis is getting the kind of cred many singer-songwriters pine for.

And, you know, he deserves a little attention. In addition to losing his father in 1992, his mother, photographer Berry Berenson, passed away aboard American Airlines ill-fated Flight 11 on September 11, 2001. Ash Wednesday documents this time of heartbreak and recovery without being preachy and, thankfully, doesn't veer into self-defeating woe-is-me, my-life-sucks territory. Listening to him, in fact, is a bit cathartic and makes me feel that life just ain't too bad after all.

Take note, hipsters: it's a 7:00pm show, so forget about your hair and come early.
